Personally I think you are in the right place, when I first saw the post's title I had assumed it was one of those "I think bottles are best" threads but your question was an honest question. I'll reword it to make it clearer to people: "If I avoid canned beers because I have bad memories of them am I missing the opportunity to drink good beers? Should I reconsider?". Seems like a pretty straight forward question with no implication of whether canned beer is good or bad.

I worked both in bars and liquor stores in Hawaii for almost 20 years ... in every capacity from warehousing to management. it would be nice to think that merchandise is always handled with "respect". that just ain't so. fragile merchandise being moved in a hurry (you're always rushed to unload trucks and containers) with forklifts and pallet jacks means quite a few tragedies. Pallets that were "lanced" were not always immediately noticed (or reported) so, many times we discovered the leakage long after the breach occurred. yes, it was disgusting. and yes, there were tragedies with bottles as well but with bottles it was almost always immediately apparent.

If I can buy a beer fresh and have a choice between cans and bottles, I always go for bottles. I don't know what it is, but I just prefer bottles for some arbitrary reason.

With that being said, the older a beer is, cans usually offer better shelf life and taste for a slightly "shelf aged" brew. Just like @eppCOS said, cans are much more convenient and "green".

If you don't like cans, then don't let anyone convince you to change your ways
