so you didn't buy the beer because of that? thats actually hilarious. I just imagine somebody angrily putting the can back on the shelf and leaving in a huff

All beer drinkers should have familiarity with the julian calendar. Or at least know how to google julian calendar or save one as a bookmark . Here's a simple one I like to use, especially towards the second half of the year because my math skills are declining

They sell Sculpin, Dorado, Vic @ Sea, and Grunion in 6 packs of bottles for $15, but most places are at least a buck above that. And Sculpin in cans I've seen for more than the bottles.

Depends where you get their beers, Victory at Sea, Big Eye, Even Keel, can be had for ~$2/12oz, whereas Sculpin (incl Habanero & Grapefruit), Dorado, are ~$3/12oz. I think my local TJ's just got sixers of Sculpin cans and they are priced at $15.99/6pk or something, but I managed to grab a can or two for $1.99/ea. I probably wouldn't buy the sixer at that price, but a single here and there, sure, why not?

lol, thats like the easiest shit in the world to understand, a lot of breweries use the julian dating method

I can see both sides here (since this is really a thread about julian dating). One one hand, no, its not really that hard to figure out. If its a beer that you want it only takes a little googling to figure out the bottling date.

On the other hand, WHY are breweries using this method? The only reason I can come up with is intentional lack of transparancy about bottling dates. Maybe if this were the '60s you could convince me that its cheaper to program a simple numerical system, but come on, its 2015 and we have computers in our breakfast cereal. Its basically a form of (very weak) encryption. I can guarantee that when they sign and date a contract, a check, or anything else with a date on it they use the conventional format that everyone understands.

Glad we got the obligatory anti BP and Sculpin thread in again.

For some reason, it is so expensive that know one buys it? Weird how short the shelf life is for Sculpin around here--go ahead bring on the "turding comments."

Just can't see why an extra 0.33$ a piece 2/$ a sixer is so much to so many. I find it one of the best IPAs that I can get year round and worth it to me.

Not a fan of Julian dating or best buy. Wish all breweries just put a canned on or bottled on date

I have bought Sculpin and thought it was as good as the reviews. It really is a nice IPA but I haven't bought it again because I think it is a bit overpriced and I like to vote with my dollars. One that I do tend to buy is Two Hearted but I also like Ranger and SN Hop Hunter. One point for Julian dating is that it is really easy to figure out just how old it is with simple subtraction. And Julian dating is much better than some of the arcane codes used by other breweries and better than no date at all.

So, its a conspiracy to hide the production date from consumers by...putting the production date on their packing. Ok...

Thank god I have my accounting degree, so I'm able to do that extremely tough math in figuring out the date on BP's cans and bottles.

While I have a decent understanding of julian dating, is there an actual reason why they use this method as opposed to just putting a date? Why not take any thought out of it? I'm asking because I really don't know.

I use the metric Julian Date, just double it and add 5...no wait, that's not right

I'm curious as well. I already feel like a jerk being on my phone constantly in a beer store. Having to decipher a brewer's dating code is another annoying step.
