Can't say I'd witnessed this until this weekend.

Browsing the singles section of a Total Wine, I found Union Jack for $2.49 a bottle. Or $2.99 a can. Both were 12 oz offerings.

Now, I've never actually noticed the same beer offered in both formats AND the same size in both bottles and cans before, so I don't know if this is the norm or not, or how frequently they're both offered. But it made me wonder...all things equal in terms of the brewed on date, not having a particular need for one over the other (for example, you don't have to buy cans for a "no bottles allowed" outing), etc...would you pay 20% more to have the canned version? Or would you save your money and buy the bottles?

I think it was an oversight/mistake at different pricing. I truly wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I've found cans and bottles in same offerings always to be the same price.

If there's no need and everything else is equal (size/date) what would someone who answers "yes" cite as a reason for paying the premium?

My answer would be no (in theory). In all likelihood if I saw fresh cans of beer X, and I felt like drinking beer X, and the price didn't seem out of whack, I probably wouldn't take the time to see if the same store had bottles that were cheaper / even fresher.

I saw Sculpin cans for a buck more than bottles at Bevmo. Screw that. I will not pay premium.

Yep, also saw this with Sculpin un upstate NY. 12.99/6er bottles, 14.99/6er for cans.

And to answer the question, no, i would not pay the premium unless I needed to - music festival, camping etc.

Not unless the bottles of said beer were really old in comparrison or I was going somewhere that glass was not an option. Then again, there is the shipping/checked luggage scenario... A lot less weight. I would say no to the buying cans for the sake of buying cans.

No way - I'm partial to bottles anyway :grimacing: *dodges tomatoes thrown by the "can crowd" on BA* :stuck_out_tongue:

I would only pay more for cans if I needed canned beer for something like fishing or tailgating.

I avoid cans, and they are almost always higher priced for the ones I consider.

I can't say I've ever seen cans of the same beer priced higher per ounce than bottles, but I only pay a premium for draft.

I see a difference in cans vs. bottles a lot at places where singles are sold and I have also seen the one dollar difference in price of cans vs. bottles for Sculpin. If available in bottles I will always get those first. Usually buy cans only if that is the only way the beer is packaged.

Just curious OP, how Fresh is the UJ you get up there? I don't even buy it anymore as it all seems to be at least 4 months old

I actually saw the opposite with cans of Sculpin compared to bottles.

Well, one of the advantages touted by breweries that use cans is their lighter weight, thus, lower shipping costs. So, in theory, cans should be cheaper.

My local Wegmans has 6 packs of Sunshine Pils bottles for $10.49. They also offer 12 packs of cans for $21.99?! What gives?!

No, I wouldn't pay more. I do buy cans, but usually because bottles aren't available (Oskar Blues, Modern Times).

Cost more. Some taste different. Nooner Pils is one recent one. I'd think a lot of people could tell the difference in can vs. bottle on that one. Sculpin is similar. Even Sam Adams Boston Lager is different to me. Taste and cost are the bigger reasons.

Also I think there's already a problem with too many beers on shelves at stores. Stores seem to carry both cans and bottles, so even more crowded shelves which is a bad thing.

Lastly, I think it is yet another way in which beer is allowing itself to not get the respect it deserves. Whether deserved or not, bottles have always had the superior reputation. Same goes for wine, even though wine sold in bladder pouches within a box are superior in terms of keeping light out, etc. I don't think the box wine or canned beer image will change ever, or at least anytime soon.
