Shelton is an importer, not a distributor. They import the beer then send them out to various distributors. It used to be Elite in CO, now it's Crooked Stave.
In the 3-tier system an importer is considered part of the first tier.

So Crooked Stave distributes 12 Percent & Shelton?

This confuses me, too. I don't know if CS took all of Elite's portion of Shelton, or just some. I've tried to get a portfolio from CS (and Elite), but haven't been successful. Bottom line: I don't exactly know what CS distributes, nor who to ask

Kyle at stave is the one to ask. He's doing the distro side I believe.

One of the guys at Small Batch told me over the weekend that Crooked Stave has an agreement with Shelton Bros. CS distributes all their beers here and in exchange CS gets on the Shelton Bros distribution in other states (kinda like Jolly Pumpkin).

    CS also distributes 12 percent.

That is correct. Crooked Stave Artisans is the distributor for both of those importers. Not much different from when Elite had Shelton's book + B United book + all the craft they carry + some Global Beer Network etc. Crooked Stave Artisans is the distribution company. CSA is selecting which Shelton beers they carry.

Not to take the subject off Cantillon but the Crooked Stave Membership states:

**As well as receiving the above listed beers and merchandise, the following beers are planned for release from our Barrel Cellar in 2013 and available to Cellar Reserve Members first.
    - L’Brett d’Or – Golden Sour
    - Origins – Burgundy Sour
    - Nightmare on Brett – Dark Sour

**Please note that a few of these beers will likely be available to the public for purchase. As a Cellar Reserve Member you are guaranteed the first opportunity to purchase these beers, to some limitation, before they go on sale to the public.

They haven't offered us any of these beers prior to the public.

How come they aren't giving us members $$$$ first crack at these beers as they stated in the membership?
Last year we could order every beer prior to public release, now we have to go stand in line, which is tuff as not everyone lives in Denver or has time to make it down to the source.

Not to get technical, but the beers referenced were released in 2013 with Cellar Reserve members getting first crack at them, IIRC. Thus, the membership information is correct.

It is now 2014, so perhaps CS has changed the policy on its non-Reserve beers.

Regardless, Batch 60 is not referenced, so there should be no expectation to get early access to that one.

I can understand the frustration with paying for the membership and not getting what you are expecting, but bf the Cellar Reserve membership is not worth it to you, I'd be happy to take it off your hands.

    /thread drift over

I hope the new CS/Shelton distribution setup results in more Cantillon around here...however that may happen.

^^After seeing what happened with L'Brett d'Or & Origins b1 (never making it outside the brewery) I can see why they may have changed it. It was kind of a middle finger to the public. The public (local stores) basically didn't see any CS sours until Q3 of last year unless you went to the brewery releases. Now seeing them ramp up production with batch 2 of L'Brett, Origins & NoB (stuck around for a couple weeks), I could see them offering the non-cellar reserve beers at limit 2 or something to prevent them from buying up 90% of the batches. But looking at how they're trying to expand I can see them keeping their non-cellar reserve sour beers to send out of state too.

On a semi-Cantillon related topic, so glad Drie Fonteinen & Girardin 1882 hit this last month.

Not sure if you were a member last year or where you are getting your information but as a member and trustee for multiple people I and all the people I trustee for were able to purchase both Origins and L'Brett d'Or last year.

Your quote wasn't part of the 2014 membership statement. Members haven't been able to buy any beers yet this year but that doesn't mean that CS hasn't set aside some for members to purchase when the first allotments are for sale. Also doesn't mean they have either. You live in CO, stop by and get some.

CS distributes Perennial now. They will grow and grow... and grow

In a few years we will probably have Jai Alai on shelves around Denver

I emailed Prairie about when we would see Bomb! in Denver next; and aside from this past GABF week, they said that we would see it March-April. Apparently after orange wax. Yes, I know this is Shelton.

Eventually the Denver market will see a better source of imported lambic and domestic RIS (not that we have it bad though)

Just saying, you can fly to Tampa for under $250 direct from Denver. It's worth a trip to the brewery!
