Whats the deal with these people going around shaming others for trading Cantillon? Today on my city subreddit /r/calgary i was talking about trading beer and got "Trading a Cantillon for those i asumme? If so shame on you" or something to that effect. I understand Cantillon is sought after but its not the only beer that is sought after and if it allows you to try other beers you want to try why would i not trade it? Its such a strange phenomenon going on now. The only reason i could see shaming someone is if they bought a bunch of cases and resold it or traded it all, but a couple bottles out of many more in a home collection?

What's the matter with me? I never trade Cantillion, I always just drink it, once I acquire it.

Is there something going on in your area of Alberta where you have access to Cantillon beers fairly easily? Fill me in on the details of your trading situation and then I'll voice my opinion.

Well, it's not like it's just related to Cantillon. If a bottle of KBBS tasted better every mile it was shipped and traded around, that beer would easily be the best in the world.

If you got it, trade it. Don't worry about others.

Unless you're hoarding them, or auctioning them, or otherwise treating them like a commodity business instead of beer, then I will judge you relentlessly in my mind since I can't get even a generic bottle of Cantillon.

To be fair, folks have been running "witches" and others out of cities with pitchforks and torches for a long, long time. They just didn't have Twitter or Reddit to post about it.

my area of alberta receives two shipments a year usually of 5 or 6 different varities 5 cases of each. some stores put them on the shelves, some stores give it to special customers only and some stores just reserve them for anyone who asks. i reserved a couple from the store that got the most so i got 3 of each kind that came and decided i want to trade 2 of the bottles for some JK stuff that we will never ever see in Alberta like spon, atrial and some other genies

Personally I don't know people trading Cantillon frequently enough to worry about shaming and/or doing the shaming. Great problem to have.

I've never traded away Cantillon (always drank them) but it's like trading any other beer. Don't see what the problem is. Some people just have something unpleasant stuck up their ass and feel they can judge.

Sounds like they know that you scoop up a bunch of bottles everytime they drop through your hook up and then trade them away. They are probably trying to pick up some bottles too but can't since you get a lot of them. Understandable to get frustrated at seeing someone getting a bunch of bottles and then just trading them away.

I know i'd be pretty irritated if there was an awesome drop of good beer/bourbon and someone was reserving a lot of them to trade/sell.

i would say 95% of it is reserved though here AND alot of places dont even sell all of theirs. i know for a fact one store still has half of each of the last two shipments because they dont just let anyone reserve it which is unfortunate. say i get 10 bottles out of the approximate 300 that come.. is it not okay to trade two of them? when there is still lots sitting in the office of the beer guy at the local shop? i should note the reserve limit is 2 PP they wont let you have more

You can get 10 bottles of Cantillon locally twice a year? Yeah... I can see the guy's point.

You can trade any beer that you put the time/money into acquiring. F*** the people that say you can't or shouldn't.

OP, you got one comment on reddit, got all flustered and it warranted this post? There are tons of people in the States who talk up their beer guy or hook them up with out of distro beers to get an in on the latest limited release. Some might even do that at a couple of stores to maximize their take if you will. It's likely some of those are solely for trading too. Take some solace in that Canada is not the only country where flippers exist.
