    Hello,

I will be in Canton, OH next weekend for the Pro Football Hall of Fame festivities, and am going to try to visit the Canton Brewing Co. Not much posted about this brew-pub on Beer Advocate or the net in general. If anyone can share any thoughts about the beer, the environment, the service, etc., I would appreciate it. Hoping they have a solid IPA available for this hop-head!

    Cheers!

Drive west on rte 30 to JAFB instead. It is about a 30 minute drive, mostly highway, to Wooster. Canton is still pretty new and really hasn't found a big following, yet. I haven't been to the brewpub so don't know about the service. Try to get about an hour north to Brew Kettle or Fat Heads for the hoppy stuff. IBUsive should be showing up at Fat Heads soon and might still have some Hop Juju on tap. Hoppin' Frog is about the same distance as JAFB but to the north on rte 77.

I haven't been to CBC yet but have heard decent things from people who have. If you have time to explore other areas it's totally worth it. Couple decent bottle shops in the area too.

Canton brewing was extremely weak sauce when I tried their beers back in March. Second the suggestion on heading to Wooster for JAFB.

Thanks, all, for the responses. Not sure if I will have time (or be in any condition) to drive to another town during my visit, but I will adjust my expectations regarding Canton Brewing accordingly.

I don't have any useful info on the brewery, but I'd say if it was your intention to go there, why not check it out? Newer breweries always have some growing pains. Most of the ratings I've seen look pretty good, and according to untapped, people are drinking their DIPA right now. I hope to check it out at some point myself.

The new brewer's offerings? I've tried many of the current beers. Not weak sauce at all. Are they crazy good? No, but not bad.

Food is great. Amazing building. The Canton brewing speak easy (bar downstairs) is the most beautiful brewery in Northeast Ohio. Amazing brick work. The old building foundation has history tied into the city of Canton.

DIPA is awesome. I've had multiple batches with the current one being the best. Great bourbon wee heavy (Wulver lite). Decent light offerings and decent german styles. They had a small batch stout that was great and put into Jack Daniel barrels.

Dunno, not up on weak sauce brewery's personnel changes, but whatever they brought to Winter Warmer was pretty damn bad. Not going to drive down to Canton to keep up to date when JAFB is a similar distance...I'll pick the road to Wooster every time.

Every one has their opinions and JAFB is clearly the better brewery. I'm pretty sure everything at winter warmer was the older brewers shit as well. Sorry to make you think you had to be up to date on a brewery you dislike based off of one festival. My bad. The old brewer is the head brewer at Royal Docks which opens in Canton this year. Just an FYI so you can avoid that one too and continue to spew hate in the right direction.

Maybe I'm taking too much offense to the weak sauce comment, but your post oozes with snobbery. I don't really completely disagree with what you said, but snobbery/ignorance is annoying.

I have to wonder why hate has to be spewed any direction. I mean, isn't variety of choice supposed to be the goal? I went to the Blues and Brews and had a great sour plum beer, the Canton DIPA was great and I'm pretty sure that docks brewery won best of show. My only point is that as a home brewer and relatively new guy to the Akron area, I'm not sure it is productive to be down on breweries that are brand new or haven't even opened.

Point of clarification: Royal Docks did not win Bedt of Show - that honor went to White Raja. Like last year, my beers won the Prople's Choice thing.

Tyler: I only made three beers while I was at Canton Brewing. To my knowledge - and I could be wrong here - the only beer at Winter Warmer that was done while I was there was the Scotch Ale and that was still in primary when I left. You are, of course, welcome to avoid my new brewery, but I hope you reconsider. I've got some really interesting plans like a complete farm-to-table beer made with Ohio malt and hops. A big Sorachi Ace varietal Imperial IPA at 100 BUs and a Kettle Sour in the tradition of Rodenbach Grand Cru that, I think, was the best beer I brought to that Blues and Brews (though the Pendragon Welsh Ale that was bittered with Heather was the one people seemed to enjoy the most).

I look forward to sharing a pint with you soon. Cheers!

While I agree with you, your join date suggests you are unfamiliar with us Ohio guys and these type of threads. We can be a surly bunch.

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. I think my post was completely misunderstood. I don't know how. I was defending whomever against jampics2. I was just telling jampics2 that he can direct his hate else where if he's got beef with whatever beer he tried. Apparently I must have been wrong with what beer was poured where, but I am by no means the person insulting any one here.

I thought it was pretty obvious sarcasm, but hey, that's the internet! I love @jampics2 too. Always value his opinion, but I called him out for sounding like a snob and some how I look like the bad guy. I must be in the Twilight Zone.

For real. @DaveSutula Reread the damn thread cause I am in no way insulting ANY ONE mentioned in this thread. I was attempting to defend some one by clarifying what beers were poured where if another member did not like them. I don't know how else to explain my post. :astonished:

In reading the thread with your comments in mind, I can see how I might have misinterpreted the comments. Sorry if I offended you and rest assured I was not offended. I'm quite used to the heat. I've always been a stalker here rather than a talker and perhaps it's better that way:slight_smile:

I hope to see you at the brewery soon. Until then, Cheers!

OK, let's not get all worked up and throw the snob thing around. Sorry for even posting here, I was simply giving my opinion on the OP's question about the beer, which I actually tried and thought wasn't anything to prioritize over other options.

My stance is simple - when a brewery goes to a fest, it's their time to shine or fall flat. The latter happened, so Canton has been off my radar for the 5 months since. I never knew they switched brewers. I didn't and still don't care. Just trying to help a guy from MN find the best beer during his trip to OH. If that makes me a snob, fully owned!!

Went to Canton yesterday. DIPA was nice, as was their Kolsch. Saison was good too, as was the BA wee heavy. Atmosphere was good, and I like the fact they are Brewing some beers with pre-prohibition recipes from Canton's original breweries.

Later went to Hoppin' Frog, and while the beer was good, it is a glorified pole barn with little atmosphere. I prefer the complete package when I got out, and I'd be glad to have Canton near by.

Snobbery or whatever aside, I am glad to hear people are enjoying the beer at Canton and I will be sure to check them out at the next beer fest!
