Capones has always been great to me. Freddy is awesome, and will happily just give you beer if you become a regular. Asking to buy some great beer, like Founders Imperial, to get KBS just isn't that big a deal. KBS is hard enough to find, it's a fair deal, you know he means well, and this isn't uncommon at all at the small stores. Then again, I'd rather drink Space and Ginger Twin at Half Acre than chase KBS these days.

Freddy is one of the best people in the local market I've run across. He probably should just ditch beermenus so he doesn't have one more thing to keep track of all day while he's unloading cases of beer on his busiest days; neither West Lakeview or Beer Temple use beermenus, maybe for that reason, or to avoid the inevitable conflict. Bottles and Cans' beermenus has been wrong every time I've been there, so now I call ahead if I'm in the area and going to stop by. But Freddy and Kristina and Vav and Chris Q are the best. And you can find fault with each of them too, if that's your thing.

Thanks. Wouldn't want to waste a trip there to find out that Freddy wasn't present.

At the same time though, he doesn't need to exploit people since he knows he has a highly sought after product. It's similar to when 9/11 occured and people were in a patriotic mood and buying flags for their homes or whereever. Places were charging way more for a flag than if it was on a 'normal' day. Exploiting is exploiting, no shitz are given on who does it and in what circumstance.

9/11 events compared to a beer release, now I've seen everything on this site!

As other have stated before just on Friday Krystina at WLV made people buy a 6 pack of Firestone to get a Parabola, and no that wasn't just for people she did not know, that was for everyone. There were signs posted on various spots throughout the store that pointed out what beers required a 6 pack purchase to get (ie sucaba, DBA, Parabola, Parabola vintages) so this is not a unique thing Freddy did. Freddy has done bottle shares in the past with various nearby breweries pouring at the events like PW, Spiteful, Flesk to name a few. I know his one to support local breweries just as @Pipeworks and others and I'm sure they would be the first ones to have his back too.

What he's terrible for is being one of those stores illegally selling ZD with muling it from the brewery with friends and selling it at $15/pack (a year or two ago when ZD was ultra scarce in the city) and I saw him and several mules get in line at Whole Foods BCBS release and then suddenly he had more Prop for sale at $60/bottle.

Regardless of how anyone views these types of practices, here's the thing: it's a direct response to consumer behavior. Bundling and charging over MSRP are what the market will bear. Maybe if dudes stopped vaulting up limited-release barrel-aged beers to ridiculous standards, we wouldn't have to buy mediocre scotch ales to have access to a single bottle.

That said, I appreciate when beer shops play it straight, especially independent ones that don't have the financial flexibility that a chain like Binny's enjoys. It's almost an exception to the rule at this point.

    LOL

If making people buy something else with a bottle of KBS or Parabola or Sucaba is the worst thing a store has done, then that store is perfectly fine by me.

False advertising prices, false advertising your inventory and ^ selling illegal products is another thing that crosses the line.
They have perhaps tried to stop false advertising their inventory recently (before it was just so blatant, posting things that nobody had for months and you would go the same day beermenus was updated with these things and they were no where to be found). . . but you would really support a place that at least used to do that?

This is not true at all. I was one of those "mules" and I muled that prop, backyard, coffee, and barley wine back to my house. @clewis901 was another "mule" whose bottles now sit in his cellar. The third "mule" was Freddy's cousin (i think that's his relationship) and he had to buy from whole foods because Freddy won't let him buy limited releases from the store so there are more bottles for his customers. Freddy didn't even buy beer there. He was there for the taps they had. Furthermore, prop was $20ish a bottle at capones. It was $60 at the place on Southport (forgetting the name of that store for some reason)

But this is the internet and you can post whatever bullshit you come up with when you're bored at 1 am

The fact that he shares bottles with people doesn't negate the fact that he exploits his customers when limited releases occur.

Yawn...this guy has to be a troll

You may feel as if you were exploited (I can't speak to that), but he takes VERY good care of his regulars. Even when I wasn't a regular there I haven't had any issues with any of the negatives brought up in this thread. But that's probably why I'm a regular there

Is there any way we can get a mod to lock this thread and let it die? This is a pissing contest between supports of the store and non supporters. Bottom line is within that area, there's multiple other liquor stores. If you don't like the practices of a store, don't go to that store.

As a store owner, I'd be doing my damnest to create more regulars. I own a BBQ place near Evanston. My goal is not to give the best cut of brisket to my regulars, but rather the customer who has the potential to be a regular. Regulars are always going to come back unless of some horrific experience...That's why they are regulars.

I'm not up charging when I make a particularly good cut of brisket. "Buy 1lb of subpar pulled pork to get one .25lb of super tasty brisket at an inflated price." Eff that man.

For the record I love beermenus, so I for one hope they don't drop updating it.
