I used priming sugar for my stout and it has been over a month. There is a little hiss but no bubbles. The stout was in a carboy for 2.5 months. I have tried swirling the bottles and changing their location. Any suggestions?
2/3 cup? for a 5 gallon batch? I use 5 oz of priming sugar (bought from LHBS) and dissolve that into 2 cups of water and bring to a boil then add that to my bottling bucket.
That is what NB said for the recipe. I also think stouts are usually under carbonated, but I got nothing.
how long has it been in the bottle? it takes 2 weeks or more at room temperature in the bottle to reach carbonation. If in the fridge probably up to a month.
With most yeasts, I'd wager full carbonation in the fridge (say, 40F) would take much longer than a month. With some, I'm not sure it would ever happen. Would make an interesting experiment though.
What temperature are you storing the bottles you are priming? I usually store my bottles at 70oF for 2 or 3 weeks and they are fine. If the storage temperature is reasonable (60-75oF), you probably had one of three things: 1) Not enough priming sugar for the batch. Either the beer volume was higher than 5 or 5.25 gal or 3/4 cup had less priming than you intended. Consider weighing your priming sugar in the future since 3/4 cup packed differently will result in different sugar amounts going into your bottling bucket. 2) You might have uneven distribution of priming sugar. Have you tried a bottle from a different point in the bottling process? If it's really carbonated then there's a mixing of priming and beer issue. 3) A yeast issue - unlikely given 2.5 months in carboy. There should be enough viable yeast to eat through your priming sugar and carbonate the bottles.
Only depending on the answers clarkm04 asked above, i.e. what temp have your bottles been at and have you checked any other random bottles, i.e. from the 'other end' of your bottling line?
My temperature was in the range of 65-74 degrees. I guess it could be a case that i under primed the bottles. I am going to try the tablets later today. I will let you know if it works in a week or two.
When people ask you questions, it's because they want to help you troubleshoot before you jump to a (perhaps erroneous) conclusion and a (perhaps detrimental) solution. Did you try any bottles from other parts of the bottling run? If the problem is uneven priming, you could be making bottle bombs by adding more sugar.
If you are determined to use carb drops...cut in half and add only to bombers first...then store in bullet-proof enclosure : )
