Had my first of four that I received in a trade and found it overpoweringly sweet and pretty one dimensional. There is no real hop presence and the ABV is relatively high (12%). Should I use the other three as candidates for cellaring? Anybody else tried aging these?

I cant say that I've tried with those beers in particular, but I have heard cellaring coffee beers is pretty hit or miss. I know with regular cold brew coffee (which is what is used a lot in coffee beers) the flavor degrades slower than hot brewed coffee, but doesnt go well for long periods of time.

Not an exact answer I know, but hope it helps.

A beer bar near me had their 1-year anniversary party a few months ago and they busted out a sixtel of Regular Coffee that'd been in their cellar for a year. And the result was awesome. Definitely different than fresh RG as the coffee had subsided a bit but was replaced with some really nice toffee, caramel and sugar characteristics.

I plan on aging a 4 pack from this year and you should feel very confident in aging your 3. I think you'll be beyond happy whenever you chose to crack those bad boys open in the future.

Thanks for the responses guys. Based on the characteristics of the beer I was completely on the fence about cellaring or trading these. I look forward to stashing them for a bit.

My comment on a lack of hops was a reference to how the beer will age, not what I was looking for in the brew. Anyone who has experience aging beer knows that the hops drop out. I didn't post this as a review of your beer, nor am I criticizing it. I thoroughly enjoy the concept of it and sought it out and traded for it for a reason. The details I provided were simply my observations in determining whether the brew would be a good candidate for aging. I didn't say the beer was bad, just not my taste fresh.

yea man i figured that out after asking the question. that's why i took the question down. like i said i get RC not working for you it is super sweet, i just wanted to know why you would look for hop notes before i realized the hop note was a general aging consideration.

since i wasted your time with the first question i will say: i'd pass off 2 of the ones you have and hold one to see. as the beer ages the lactose and dextrose find each other and the coffee integrates with both to be an overall toffee thing ((as @TheHopBrewKid (dog and cask?) said)). as with toffee, those flavors in that beer are built on a base sweetness so if its too sweet for you now, as it enters its secondary phase, i think when its achieved that tertiary phase down the road you will still find it cloying. 1 in the cellar is worth the point of interest 3 maybe not so much.

@augiecarton Yes, sir. Good old Dog & Cask and my main man, Josh. That was a great event and it was good to chat with you a bit that night. Actually came down to the brewery the day RC cans sold out (thankfully my wife and I arrived early) and hung with Phresh for a bit. Was going to come downstairs and hi to you but didn't want to be a pest.

See you at EBF in 10 days. Not working the Captain Lawrence booth like last year, but will be attending Sat Session 1.

@TBonez477 and at the same tapping @TheHopBrewKid is mentioning was a delightful night. My first time experiencing it and shortly after fresh add he brewery and the are two different coffees. Sweet with thick body, lactose steps up for bat as Augie said but dextrose kisses you like a late valentine. JUst my 2 cents for what its worth. Cheers man and you do you.
