just a warning to people with Cascade stuff iin their cellars, I've had 3 different bottles foam up on me lately.
    • Opened a bottle of Bourbonic (straight from the cellar) about 2 months ago, and lost about 6-8 oz of it all over my floor.
    • Opened another bottle of Bourbonic (well chilled) about 3 weeks ago, and once again it volcanoed out of the bottle. Thankfully, I had it over the sink to contain to contain the mess.
    • Opened a bottle of Vlad this evening and it immediately started gushing. Tried to pour what I could into a glass to keep from losing too much, but it was nothing but foam. Set the bottle down after pouring about 1/3 out, and came back 10 minutes later to a foamy puddle on the counter.
Anyway, just wanted to throw out a warning. Make sure they're chilled, and open them over a sink or something. It's bad enough whe something gushes, but when it costs almost $1/oz it's extra aggravating.

I opened a bottle of each a few weeks ago and had no issues at all.

In the past two weeks I have opened a Sang Royal, Sang Nior and the vine and had no issues. Cleaning up amazing (and expensive) beer off of the floor is always tough.

I'm not sure if I've ever had a Cascade beer that didn't gush.

The fresh bottles have always been fine, but at this point I'm not going to invest any more time or money cellaring them.

I shipped a bottle of Blueberry to a regular partner a few weeks ago that appears to have exploded in transit. First time I've ever heard of this happening with a Cascade bottle.

I've never had a problem with Kriek, Apricot, Vine, Sang Royal, Sang Noir (several), but thanks for the warning. Hoping to try the two that the OP mentioned soon, good to know that there may be potential for gushing!

Question for you guys that have had gushers. Do you pop the cork, as in let it fly out of the bottle, or do you keep hand pressure on top of the cork and let the bottle pressure slowly escape from the side of the cork when it's almost out?

I have a shipment coming from Cascade to the east coast. Hoping there are no issues in transit!

I will second this. I also have opened a bottle of both Bourbonic and Vlad in the past few months with both of them gushing quite a lot.

I have gotten many shipments from Cascade and never a problem in transit. Bottle are occasionally highly carbonated. I always over chill before serving, open, let warm up and then serve. The best solution that I can come up with:slight_smile:

This is huge news, especially coming from Maltmaster. Thanks for the heads up, I'll be drinking my bottles sooner than later and definitely over chilling them before opening.

I've had a lot of Cascades and I've never had one gush. I've always chilled them, not sure if that is the difference. I've had some with some time on them as well.

This should not really come as a surprise, the potential always exists for foam over or gushing with beers from breweries like Cascade, Jolly Pumpkin and so on. This is the nature of the beer that is in the bottle, it is always a possibility. No need to worry and go out of your way to drink your Cascade in your cellar out of fear. Refrigerate the bottle for 24 hours before opening, disturb the bottle as little as possible before pouring and you will cut down on your risk.

just opened an 2009 apricot. gushed, but opened in sink and i don't think i lost more than an ounce. @rutager, i always open corks very slowly.

in other news, the apricot tastes excellent. apricot is still around, complexity is greater than fresh, still lots of lactic sourness, soft french oak aftertaste. bit hot, but all told very good. easily better than kriek; agree with whoever i read recently say that apricot is their best widely available beer.

(edit: by widely available, i moreso mean "constantly available." i personally think it beats sang noir, but sang rouge is on another level)

Opening at fridge temp is important. Let it warm up in your glass or on the counter before pouring. Like others have said here, pop it in the fridge 24 hours or so before opening.

I'd recommend being very gentle with the bottle when moving it around before opening. Set it down gently, no quick movements in your hand. Everybody says they get gushers with JP beers and have never had one foam up on me.
