What say you? Which one is the most versatile? Best overall flavor profile? Etc.?

I'm going to buy a Citra 2 lb bundle off ebay and need to figure out what hop to bundle the lb of Citra with.

Or, I can do any of the list below:

    • Citra and Bravo hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Calypso hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Cascade hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Chinook hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Cluster hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Crystal hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and CTZ hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and El Dorado hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Galena hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Golding hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Hallertau hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Horizon hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Liberty hops 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Magnum hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Magnum hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Mt Hood hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Northern Brewer hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Nugget hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Perle hops 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Santiam hops 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Summit hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Tetnang hops 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Ultra hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Warrior hops, 16 oz (1#) each
    • Citra and Willamette hops, 16 oz (1#) each

Well, my first choice was Centennial or Columbus, but neither are available in this bundle. But, thanks for the recommendation.

    Look again...
I would go for the CTZ or Chinook, but that is simply because I am not a fan of either Centennial or Cascade :grimacing:. Looks like you are doing HopHeaven. Great guy, I get my hops from him every time.

Columbus is actually sold out already. Apparently, I'm late to the party.

Yeah, he runs a solid site. I have a $10 off ebay gift ceritifcate right now, so I'm essentially getting a free lb of hops by doing this. That's why I have to figure this out. I normally don't buy in bulk, so that is why I mentioned my purchase possibly being a versatile hop. I've heard people say that Chinook can be a little strong for some people, but I can't think of any Chinook beers that I found to be that way. I'm assuming that I could use the Chinook as a bittering hop, right? Does it work well in later additions, too? I've not used it that I can remember - at least not in large amounts.

Chinook, blends well or good alone.

I use Chinook a lot. It plays a supporting role in my IPA and lead in my Coffee Porter and Imperial Stout. It plays a bigger role in my Red IPA that I make sometimes. Love it late and as a dry hop, does have a little harsher bitterness. The APA American Stout we all collaborated on a few years ago has it late and was a decent beer. I got a 2nd place with it.

What kind of beer do you want to brew?

    APA/IPA -> cascade
    Brown ale/porter/stout -> willamette

Chinook and citra play nice together. Plus chinook plays into so many other beers besides an IPA that you'd be silly not to.

It depends on what you brew the most of. I do a lot of dark beers and I'd go with the Willamette. That said, I'd sneak Cascade into just about anything. It's a great hop.

Cascade and Chinook then make lots of Pales and IPA's....

We will have to agree to disagree

I thought the chinook mostly worked in the AP Stout, but I don't think I would do it again.

Is there a real difference between hops labeled CTZ vs Columbus ? I've often wondered this

Not really. Columbus, Tomahawk, and Zeus are all the same hop, but each is grown on different farms and have slightly different additional characteristics. Each is resiny and dank as the primary attribute, but one has more citrus while the other has some blackberry. They are commonly sold either way, as Columbus or Zeus (never seen anyone sell straight Tomahawk) or as CTZ.

Columbus might be the greatest hop ever...

I would go chinook if no CTZ

I went with the lb of Citra, lb of Chinook, and a half lb of Simcoe just for the hell of it. Got my eye on a lb of Mosaic, too. Gonna be alot of APA's and IPA's coming down the line, I guess.

Solid combo. Chinook for me, all day, every day. Mosaic is a powerful hop. A pound should last you a very long time.
