Hi all, I was in London and some other parts of England from 25th of February through 5th of March. Will never again go over at that time as there were way too many kids on holiday. These were not English kids who were in school but every European on Earth it seemed was in London. Enough of that rant. We still had an awesome time and I set a new personal record by consuming 71 pints of cask ale during our 9 night trip. I had 12 pints the last day. We visited York, Newark, Cambridge and Ely on day trips. I meet Duncan Sambrook, and at a pub near the deserted Young's Brewery I saw the John Young Memorial Room contained within the pub (Old Sergeant). More later.

Zimbo, seemed like we spent all our time in pubs but not totally the case. At the Sambrook's brewery, we were walking down the street and there it was, it was a Sunday and I assumed it was closed. There were lots of cars in front so I went up and pulled on the door, open. I asked the first person I saw if they were open and the next thing we are talking to Mr. Sambrook. After I told him how much we love England, real ale, and that I had read about how they came to be, he gave us a personal tour and multiple tastings. All on a day they were closed. He was only there because they had hosted a function the night before and there was some cleaning up going on. Nice guy and I made an effort to have his beers whenever I came across them. I like them and even ordered a Wandle whilst in my favorite Young's pub! The staff who have never seen me order anything else, were shocked. All lots of fun. More later.

71, is that all! Just messing, it's more than I could manage in that time. Where did you end up in Cambridge and did you find anywhere good in Ely? What beers stood out the most?

I really like Sambrooks beers, definitely a great cask ambassador I would say!

In Ely we liked the Townhouse Pub and in that pub I had a excellent session ale. Earl Soham Victoria Bitter. I will get back with more beers when I have access to my notes.

Was the Victoria Bitter exceptionally bitter? It used to be uncompromisingly so but I last visited the brewery in 1990 and they might have toned down the hops since then.

Marquis, I found it very smooth and flavorful. I find very few cask beers too bitter. I still can't say enough about the Just Beer Micropub in Newark. What a place! Had 4 pints there, three were by a brewery from Lincoln. I will post when I have my notes handy.

Just checked; it was the Albert Ale which I remember for the hops , never tried the Victoria.

Chavs - the Newark underclass. The town is full of them.

Chav - Council Housed and Violent.
Basically what middle class people call young people who wear tracksuits and sports gear while not intending on participating in sports.

Don't like to hear any thing negative about Newark, love the town and JustBeer Micropub is the best. That said did not see any undesirables and I've been three times.

Just letting you know what he means. To most people unfamiliar with the bias against them they are just normal people.

I'm not using the word "chav" in a prejudiced way. Chav is a Newark slang word - derived from Romany - meaning "boy" or "young man".

"Eh up, chav" was any everyday term of greeting when I was a teenager. That was back 40 years ago. Long before the rest of the country pounced on the word.

We always go on a weekday and during times when English kids are in school. I have a contact, and maybe some of you guys could help me in the future, who tells me when the English school holidays are. That way I can avoid those times. That is why I was so upset on this trip when I saw every European on Earth and their miserable kids were in London. So in Newark we have had quiet and people on the streets are adults. The way I want it.
