Going to brew a NEIPA and cask condition it along w/hops in the barrel to get a DDH character. Wondering about the benefits if any of fining the beer when I rack it to the cask as would be normal MO. I usually use isinglass. I’m assuming it won’t matter and may actually have a detrimental effect of pulling the good stuff out. Anybody have thoughts on this either way?

Are you wanting brite beer? Then fine it. If you're worried about stripping out flavor and aroma I wouldn't bother.

The more I think about this, the more I wonder if the isinglass would have any effect on it at all anyway. From my understanding isinglass has a magnetic charge that helps pull things out of suspension, however it could be a possibility that the polyphenols from the yeast esters hop polyphenols polyphenols charges which may explain why they bond together so well? I don't know just thinking out loud now...

From my perspective the rationale for utilizing finings is to produce a clear beer. Since the so called ‘NE’ style IPA is intended to be a non-clear beer I do not see the sense of fining this sort of beer regardless of serving method.

    Cheers!

I suspect the state of the science is not there yet. Would need to identify the beneficial haze-causing particles, which I will call j-particles, for juicy, and then identify a way to strip out all the extraneous, non-beneficial haze, leaving behind the good stuff. Rumor has it a hop/IPA book will soon be released. Perhaps the j-particles will be revealed.

Hmm. You certainly are at the threshold of science. Not being sarcastic either.
Try it. Then try the other way. I have a supposition that you are doing the work of the lord here.

Yup, Scott Janish is planning on writing the book and he plans to write a Chapter 5 of “Haze and Hops”.

Whether there will be definitive scientific results on what exactly constitutes the turbidity/murkiness of the so called ‘NE’ style IPA remains to be seen.

    Cheers!

You say "planning on writing" and I thought I heard "soon to be released." Hopefully I'm closer to the truth.

FWIW, I recently used gelatin finings on a NEIPA and a NEPA. Normally this would produce a bright beer for me, with say a traditional ale recipe. In this case, it only had a slight effect. I would say it took some of the haze out, I didn't wind up with an opaque beer like many NEIPAs, but the resulting beer is still very hazy. There was still a lot of hop character / J-particles left over, but I felt as though it stripped some of the oomph out of both beers. I won't do it again.

J particles are probably related to quarks, strings, possibly dark matter.

Thx for the replies — I laughed and cried. Gonna go to cask naked — no finings. Will let u know how it turns out. Cheers.
