It's not rocket science. If it is clean it is clean. If it has chucks of shit on the bottom is is dirty. Pretty simple. There you now have the ability.

@ZAP what if there are chunks of shit hiding behind a label but the bottom is clean?

@funkybuddha do you properly measure all the incoming growlers to ensure they are 32oz or less from your growler maker?

Jeez...I regret mentioning even mentioning Funky Buddha in my initial response to the OP. I was just trying to be helpful and let him know that CCB will fill any 32oz or gallon growler

That's why crowlers are great. Gladly pay the extra buck over the growler fill to get a crowler. It keeps beer better, fresher, carbonated and is infinitely recyclable (pssst, it's also great if you trade). Also, don't have to drag around empty growlers in the back of the car, if I don't know whether I will make a stop somewhere on a given day.

It's just the outlay of the brewery to get the seamer and cans (can even be plain aluminum cans with labels, I'm not fussy, it's what's inside), which I would think would probably be a non issue to most bigger brewers in Florida. Oh, but it is a huge plus to customers... I'm just glad CCB, Cycle, Three Palms and Due South at least (if not others) put out this customer friendly option.

Well then I guess that shit deserves to be there and won't do any harm to the beer:slight_smile: No guarantee their cleaning process would have found that shit either. To be honest I really could care less what this Funky place does but thousands of breweries and well thought of brew pubs across the country seem to make the "fill any growler" thing work

These crowlers sound like the way to go.

You're correct, it's not rocket science. And "clean" does to some extent mean that you have removed the visible "chunks of shit" you mentioned.

I, however, applaud Funky Buddha for taking the extra steps to make sure they go the next level and "sanitize" to kill as many of the microscopic "chunks of shit" you CAN''T see. You know, the stuff that can infect your beer, or possibly make you sick.

You don't homebrew, do you ?

I have brewed and my brother is quite prolific at it and we both are germ phobes...but we both see no issues with having growlers filled like I stated. I trust my cleaning process more than some growler that was filled with coins for two years or piss, or chew spit or who knows what and then gets a little washing at the brewery.....It disgusts me to think what someone could do to a growler that is turned in to be cleaned at whatever place and now I have to hope the kid just out of college working part time cleaning growlers isn't too stoned to do it right? I'm exaggerating but it is disconcerting and I would much rather know what has happened to the glass I am getting beer in. Health inspectors really should not even allow growlers to be returned and cleaned....who knows what happened in them previously (I could get more explicit)......

Like I said.....hundreds, probably thousands of top notch places seem to make it work to just fill growlers when people bring them in....don't reinvent the wheel in the name of making a few more sales of glass containers....I have never in twenty years had one of my growlers infected...the cleaning process is quite simple..

Fill it with hot water.......empty it...

Fill it with hot water....empty it...

Fill it with hot water....empty it...

Fill it with hot water.....let it sit over night....then empty it...then empty it again...then empty it again and until every drop of water is out...

    Done

In addition to what Ryan explained, I think there are a couple other valid reasons besides sanitation and ensuring proper growler size for breweries like Funky Buddha to do what they do. First, is branding. Funky Buddha has and continues to put a lot of time, effort and money into branding. Having their beer in another brewery's growler could be problematic for a variety of reasons. Second is growler types. For those not aware Funky Buddha has a counter pressure fill growler machine. This allows beer to stay fresher, longer. There is one type of growler that fits this machine. So while there are a variety of different 32oz. growlers out there only one fits their machine properly.

I don't buy into that messaging argument either...If I made a trip to your place to buy Funky Budha beer I know damn well what I am drinking even though my growler might say "Cigar City". It's not like I'm sitting in the hotel pouring the beer out and thinking "Shit is this Cigar City beer of Funky Bouda beer?"

But your second point is the best argument I have heard yet. That makes sense and if that is why they don't fill other growlers I have no issues with that one.

Personally I love the crowlers that I have heard are available in Florida. That is the direction I will be going when in the state. I wish they were offered in my state.

I am sure FB's intentions are good with their growler policy but I just don't like the idea of having to give up my FB growler that I may have used once or twice for a growler that could have been used 100 times with a seal that may not be as tight and who knows what's been in it.
