    Hey all,

Just had a question about Leon. I traded for a bottle about 6-8 months ago and i thought it was one of the most enjoyable beers i was fortunate enough to get my hands on in a long, long time. I really love the combination of apple brandy and barleywine in general, and the beer itself was amazing. Anyway, i thought it was so damn good that i traded for an additional bottle about three months prior and shared it with a bunch of friends. The beer was awful and tasted like pure salt. It was as if someone had dumped an entire saltshaker into my glass. I've never had a beer that tasted like that before and i hope i never do again; it was most definitely a drain pour.

What's up with this? I know beers get infected from time to time but i hadn't heard anything about Leon being that way and also I didn't think that infected beers had a salty taste. I've had bad bottles before and nothing tasted the way this one did.

Anyway, Leon is a great beer and i will probably try and get a third someday just to remind myself of how amazing the first bottle was. I'm just curious as to what was up with the bottle i had. I love the beer, and CCB is a fantastic brewery.

Yeah, definitely the first time I've heard of this with Leon... I wish I had bought more, and there have been no complaints that I am aware of from the few lucky folks who got bottles a couple weeks ago at the Brewpub release. My first thought is that there may have been some foreign material in the bottle prior to washing that wasn't removed by whatever rinsing/sanitizing procedure CCB uses prior to filling the bottle. My second thought is that the bottle could have been sabotaged. It's very easy to remove a cap without damaging, drink the goods, and then refill with whatever and recap. Was this trade with someone you had traded with previously?

no, but i seriously doubt they would do that haha. At least i hope not! the trade went really smoothly all things considered. But it is odd concerning how way, way off it was from the first bottle. I've had enough beer to know that there was something seriously wrong with whatever i drank.

Did it have a CCB cap on it or just a plain gold or silver cap. Thinking maybe it wasn't a Leon. I have had a few bottles and they have all been GLORIOUS!!

I really wish they'd remake this one, had it on tap and it was probably the best barleywine I've ever tasted.

You know what? I can't remember. I think the cap may have been gold. It had the leon label on it though so i dont know!

I gotta get some more. The first one was so damn good.

Gold cap means you got ripped off.
Should have the CCB logo on the cap AFAIK. I didn't get one, but every beer I've ever had from CCB had a logo on the cap.

fuck. I honestly don't know either way. I find it really insane that anyone would rip anyone off over beer. That diminishes my faith in humanity just a bit. Its just beer for fuck's sake. I'm not going to accuse anyone of anything considering i don't really know what went down other than the beer was way off. This was a while back and i trade all the time. Whatever was in there was made pretty poorly.

Just wondering if you ever had the opportunity to try King Henry? I've never personally had the chance to try Leon.

All 5 of the bottles I've opened/drank from were great. CCB logo cap or no dice. Love it to death, sad that it's gone now.

There was a time when CCB just used gold caps as well if I'm not mistaken.... And it really wasn't THAT long ago, maybe less than 2 years ago? Pretty sure they were using the labeled caps for Leon though.

Based on the bottle in my fridge, they indeed used labeled caps. :-D

Leon should have had the stamps on the cap

Nice! I'd be curious if you'd change your mind on Leon being the best barleywine you've ever had after KH. Let me know!

So what does it mean if there isn't a label on the cap? I've seen some Improv in Jacksonville at an ABC that had a solid gold cap with no CCB stamp.

I've had both. I still give my nod ever so slightly to Leon, but that could be my not so inner homer talking

Means that shit is OLD. There was a time when CCB used plain gold caps and did not date-stamp the bottles.

That means its old. Is it improv or improvisación?
