2018 Adam from the Wood (bourbon) from Hair of the Dog. I will be tasting a bunch of HotD beers over the coming year. This brewery is in the top 3 for me. Zero carbonation on the pour, just as I like it. The nose is just incredible and complex. Old port, figs, cherries, walnuts, pipe tobacco, an earthy note, and a hint of black licorice. The barrel doesn't overpower the nose. The taste is...phenomenal. More black licorice, bourbon, sherry, leather, tobacco, very dark chocolate, a bit of coffee grounds, burnt toffee, charred wood, and oak. This is so complex and well integrated. I can't get over how much flavor comes through on these beers. The lack of carbonation clearly plays a large role in this. Just pure joy to smell and taste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied - much more of a strong ale than a stout on the feel.

Not a cellar review yet, but wanted folks here to see there is an online barleywine tasting event getting scheduled for Jan29-31. Sort of like these cellar reviews but everyone will be posting barleywines. I suspect many will enjoy both and I have been eyeing some potential gems in my cellar for participating.

2014 Deschuttes Mirror Mirror and Brooklyn Hand & Seal 2014 Im looking at you.

It will be a great tasting. Thinking of busting out some old Thomas Hardy's for the event!

Not quite as bright as i remember it but that cherry flavor is just as if not more deep than i remember it. Still incredibly balanced. Ages well, not sure if it really "gains" anything but definitely has not dropped off.

2018 Jam the Radar. Pours pitch black with little head. Nose is dominated by chocolate and raspberries - no complaint. I'm trying hard to find other notes on the nose, but I think I would be making things up if I said I could smell other things. I keep going back and it's chocolate and raspberries - maybe raspberries dipped in chocolate? The taste is pretty insane. Again, I'm getting the chocolate and raspberries, but I'm getting more. cherries, brown sugar, bourbon, toffee, blackberries, oak, and some nice hard fruit candy. Sweet is the overall theme, but definitely not too sweet. This is just a lovely drink with a thick and creamy mouthfeel. No alcohol is detectable. This is amazing and has held up very well.

Im not entirely sure but their website says that some of their beers can sit for 3-5 year but dont list which ones are 3 and which ones are 5. I think its 5 though because my initial review was in 2016.

Also if anyone can interpret the bottle date that would answer our questions. L31005 18:00. Im guessing 12/13/05 at 6pm but that would put 16 year on it which is def not right.

    Bottled 8/2013, drank 1/2021.
Motor Oil, basically no head. Aroma is of Dark chocolate hint of soy sauce, and ash. Taste initially follows the nose, then transitions into a wiff of dates then dark malt with hint of oxidation with some sherry notes, and ends with a bitter and dry cacao. Body is light to medium with slight carbonation. Holding up ok but may be getting towards the end. Has changed quite a bit from fresh and honestly i enjoyed it more fresh - 2 years out. Missing that huge body and brightness. I have 1 more 2013 in the cellar, will probably do 10 years and call it quits at that point.

    2016 Red Brick Beard Envy

    50% Oak Aged Barleywine

Pours clear amber color, thin cream colored head. Caramel, vanilla, a little oak. Fairly sweet, long finish, some negative oxidation. Aroma grows fruitier as it warms even more from cellar temperature - apricot, black cherry

Polling cellaring minds....ive got a few bottles that maaaybe shouldnt have been cellared.
Im thinking of starting to open them and sampling, you know for science.
Seems like most reviews posted on this thread are for more cellarable beer styles and wonder if ye would indulge some of these more questionably, and likely less enjoyable aged beers?

Somewhat of an aged gem from a store. AleSmith Speedway stout. Canned 12/12/19, so just about 13 months.

Still a great beer, if you love the coffee punch of fresh speedway then don't age it this long. At this point the coffee is starting to show some staling, nothing crazy but just that first sign of staling coffee grounds in the flavor. Nose is still astonishingly bright coffee and sharp sweet molasses.

This is an OG in the coffee stout game and revisiting the base is a nice reminder of where the whole wild ass US stout scene of today launched off of.

Stone Vertical Epic, bottled on December 6, 2012. A small amount of head. The nose is full of black licorice, cherries, a bit of tobacco, bread, and brown sugar. The taste is really nice. Still a lot of black licorice, but an intense sweetness and bitterness almost immediately. The brown sugar is really evident on the aftertaste. Tree sap, pine, maple, dark chocolate, coffee grounds, and grapefruit peel. Very odd combination, but it really works. I honestly can't remember exactly how I felt drinking this fresh 8 years ago, but it has definitely retained some of the main features. No sign of oxidation, and I bet this will be fine for further aging. Cheers!

Anyone else remember how great the original bottled batch of White Chocolate was? Goddamn I loved that beer. Guess I should seek out some of the newer batches to check out how it is now.

For sure. I too have some of these that I can’t muster up the “courage” to drink. But when I do I will be sure to post here!

Mout & Mocca - De Molen.
Date on the back of the bottle is 13 JAN 2021. So I assume that is the end of the 5 years best by mentioned on the front label.

Haven't had this one fresh so nothing to compare it tool
