Just got some '12 BA Blackout Stout and 2x '13 BA Blackout Stout in a trade- I had thought I was getting three '12's but now I'm thinking about drinking the '12 and a '13 as a mini-vertical. Unless someone in the Wisconsin/Illinois area has a '11 sitting in the cellar that they want to hook me up with.

Either way the question is what to do with the last '13. I may hook up a regular trading partner with it, but if I keep it- ofc it'll depend on how I like the '12 and '13 that I do drink, but historically speaking how has BA Blackout Stout held up over time? Did a search but didn't find anything too specific- my guess is that it'll hold up but is it worth my while?

    Thanks in advance

Historically speaking, BA Blackout is a killer to age. One of three perfect beers I've ever rated.

The sweet spot has been about two years for past vintages - the '08 & '09 were beauty in a bottle at that age. We pulled out two bottles of '09 at a tasting this past summer, so about 3 years, & both were off - one considerably, one slightly. I don't know if they aged out past their prime or if there was a very slow-moving contamination fouling the beer. Short story: great to age, but wouldn't let it go past a couple years.

With this year's you can't lose. It's the best version fresh since the '09, just gorgeous. So keep it or save it, but I can't imagine the '13 is going to improve given where it's at now.

Got it- way I see it is, if its not going to improve it much, there's no point in cellaring them except to keep them available to drink later. Thanks!
