My wife bought me a mini fridge for Christmas so I can finally cellar my beers at the proper temperature. It is sized that I have a shelf about four inches from the ceiling of the fridge, which is not enough space to store anything upright up there. I know bottles should be cellared upright, but what about cans? If I'm correct, the main reason bottles should be upright is to minimize the amount of beer exposed to air. With a can, it seems that the amount of beer exposed to air would be roughly the same whether the beer is upright or on its side. I'd like to fill this space with some Ten Fidy and Tallgrass Big Ricc. I know some people cellar cans, especially Ten Fidy, but is there any reason why I shouldn't cellar them laying down?

Never heard the whole air thing with laying bottles.. I'm more interested to hear how that's possible?

Stand a bottle up and the narrow neck only allows a dime size surface area to be in contact with the air, lay it down and the surface area in contact with air is much larger.

The air of course, particularly oxygen, reacts with the beer, leading to flavors often described as cardboard. Less beer in contact with oxygen=less oxidization=less cardboard taste.

I got a four pack of Ten Fidy yesterday. I was surprised to see it was canned in January 2015, so it's already nearly a year old.

You sure about that date? All my Ten Fidy have September or October canning dates going back to 2012.
