May 23-31, 2014 is Central Oregon Beer Week this year, opening with a SMaSH beer event at McMenamins, a Brewfest at Sunriver to close it out, and 9 days of beer events in between. Full disclosure: I'm one of the volunteer organizers of COBW.

I've read some references to out-of-town BAs visiting, so I wanted to see who all is planning on checking it out. I'm planning to be at as many events as I can, so if you're in Bend/Prineville/Redmond/Sisters/Sunriver at the end of this month, watch out!

I'll be in Bend the 23rd through the morning of the 27th. Probably gonna check some stuff out.

Too bad the collaboration beer isn't being tapped until the following weekend.

I'm impressed you got a COBW badge for Untappd. We still haven't had one for Seattle Beer Week.

I'll be there the 23rd thru the 25th. Anything going on that first weekend you would recommend?

Is there a website for COBW?

    - On the 23rd is our SMaSH Fest, 17* SMaSH beers from Central Oregon breweries at McMenamins. Individual beer details are at centraloregonbeerweek.com, but we've got beers with experimental hops, a couple of breweries are using Mosaics, so it's no "Oh, this is what Fuggles or taste like by themselves" type thing; breweries are bringing their A-game.

*Boneyard's beer has a little bit of a second malt, so it's technically a "DMaSH" and not eligible for the People's Choice award, but we thought people would prefer to have their beer at the event rather than exclude it.

    - Sunday at Lava Lanes bowling alley will have the Beer Angels collab beer (Orange Belgian) along with karaoke.

    - Monday's event at Silver Moon will have a special coffee stout and beer ice cream from Addy Mac's.

Broken Top Bottle Shop has bands and tastings every night of COBW.

:-) Unlike Terry, I knew there was a website and already checked out the events. I read over the different events, but really couldn't get a feel for any of them. So as the local, resident Bend expert, I was hoping you could give me your insight and make a recommendation.

We're trying to promote everything equally, but I can see how that makes it hard to predict which event have the highest beer geek appeal vs. more general/casual fan appeal. For Memorial Day weekend, the SMaSH fest is definitely my recommendation: the McMenamins grounds are a great setting, and those guys have proven they know how to run an event. It's also where you're likely to find the most "not found anywhere else" beers of the week in one place. Stuff is still getting lined up too, so I may have some more recommendations and unoffical bottle shares, etc. when we see each other.

I wanted the link to send to the organizers of BBW. Which you should come to, John. 2 new breweries just open, maybe 2 more by September. Sorry for going OT, Mr. Moderator. :flushed:

A couple questions for you guys:

    1. What events from other beer weeks were your favorites? I think we've got a good roster of different events, but I'm not above looting others' good ideas, either for this year if we can swing it or to make next year better.

    2. Is anyone bothered by non-local breweries as part of a beer weeks' events, or is more breweries/beers always better?

The best beer week I've ever been to is Philly Beer Week. However, their focus is different from what you have going on in Bend. Phillly's strength lies primarliy in their import/distribution system, and in the past I've seen top craft beer bars and pubs hosting events with Funky Buddha, Russian River, Founders, Bells, Half Acre, Cigar City, Hill Farmstead and even Deschutes. Those tend to be the more popular events, as the local beer scene (outside of Tired Hands) isn't really all that outstanding (though Troegs and Victory events don't do too badly).

Anyway, during PBW, you see a lot of tap takeovers, either featuring a particular brewery or an all star line-up from some distributor's portfolio. They've also been very successful in getting brewery principles to attend these events as well (Shawn Hill, Vinnie C., Gary Fish, Fritz Maytag and the like) Not sure if that's something that would interest organizers of COBW, even if they could pull it off.

One of the reasons I wanted the link, was so I could poach ideas. Here's the link for BBW: http://bellinghambeerweek.com/ . It doesn't have a lot listed yet, but we're just in the ramp-up stage for this year.

We do lots of brewers nights/tap take over events, have the breweries in town collaborate on a beer, and do some other stuff. We do the beercan derby, like the pinecar derby from boyscouts, and one of our best attended events is Barleywood Squares. Set up some scaffolding in a 9 square shape, get some local "beerlebrities" (brewers, bloggers, bartenders, etc) to sit in them and participants win prizes.

A couple things we're looking at for this year: an "Opening Ceremonies" pub crawl, give folks a paper to stamped at each participating stop, get prizes. Brewers Olympics: Pelican used to (maybe still does) do this. Keg toss, handtruck races, server races, etc. Bar/brewery with best score wins the trophy, which rotates with the annual winner. A bicycle Poker Run. Stuff like that. SBW is having a mini-golf tournament, and I think a disc golf tourney would work too. All that's in addition to the usual dinners, brewers nights, focus nights (sours, stouts, etc.), check SBW's site, lots of good ideas there to steal (oops, share ) http://www.seattlebeerweek.com/events.

There's nothing wrong with bringing in the outside breweries. For example, a guy used to be a bartender, then a sales rep for a distributor here town. He is now Stone's rep for San Francisco. One of the bars will have a Stone night, put on 4-6 of the usual brews, and our guy will talk to somebody at Stone, and gets us a few kegs of stuff that doesn't generally get much reach. I'm guessing there's folks in Bend with some industry contacts.

Maybe for next year do an East Coast night. Bring in Smuttynose, Troegs, whoever (maybe make a deal for a pallet of cans from Vermont:wink: ). This year will be our 3rd, and we're still learning things. It gets hectic, so remember to have a beer and have fun.

Just got some beer info for the Silver Moon event on Monday:

    › IPA
    › ISR
    › Chocolate Orange Bourbon Stout
    › Pils
    › Get Sum
    › Porter
› Get Sum Lemon Haze(lemon & dry hopped Get Sum)
    › Aaron's Hawaiian Universe(Galaxy Dry Hopped Maui)
    › Nelson Spacefish Rye IPA
› Bourbon Demo Man (2013 barrel aged strong ale)
› 2013 Rum barrel aged Conquistador (A Mexican inspired imperial brown aged in a rum Cask with chocolate and chilies)

If you're unfamiliar with Silver Moon, this would be a great introduction. Bourbon Demolition Man is miserable though, don't bother ordering it, just leave it for me... :grinning:

Silver Moon makes good beer in an absolute hole tavern.

Heading over Government Camp right now. Bend bound!

Unfortunately, we're leaving town on Monday. On the other hand, the weather is beautiful up here today (Saturday), and it appears that Boneyard just put on a keg of Notorious. I believe we'll get by... :-)

They've spiffed up the place, now it's only a partial hole tavern.
