After some thought and comparison, I decided that I prefer CW's Y2k over the Bourbon Barrel Aged version. While I do enjoy the BA addition on most beers, I think the Y2k is already complex and tasty enough.

Curious if anyone else feels the same way.....

    Thoughts?

Both wonderful, refuse to choose. Guess it depends on my mood.

That is the type of discussion I was hoping this thread would yield.

Obviously I was kidding. I love both beers, but opinion threads are the worst. Especially if your description is, "complex and tasty".

I like both, but I'm not crazy about either.
I'd be curious to try BBBW and Insanity in a blind taste test, but I haven't seen Insanity in WI.

This year was my first exposure to these beers. I was not as excited as I expected to be about either of these beers after drinking themhe Y2K could be a simple matter of taste, as it was more bitter than I like in a barley wine. However, beyond that, there were some rubbing alcohol flavors that I picked up. I figured I'd hold off on the others I had to see what time will do. After drinking the BBBW, I am concerned about those flavors going away. After all of the time spent in a barrel, there was still an issue for me with the "bad alcohol" taste. To attempt to avoid coming off as a hater, I was dually impressed with the Peruvian Morning. I just detected something in the BW's that I don't believe should be there.

Not sure Insanity is currently on the shelf, but it has certainly been on the shelf in the recent past.

Also: BBBW > Y2K and BBBW > Insanity.

Well, since the title of this thread is clearly asking everyones' opinions......it's a real noodle scratcher as to why you'd open, let alone comment, on it......

CW y2k is a great base beer, but BBBW went from really good to amazing with this years bach bacause they aged it for a full year. The full year aging in barrels really smoothed that beer out tenfold. I wont even touch the Y2k now that BBBW is this awesome!

I don't believe it's distributed in Illinois, though you could probably shoot up to the Kenosha Woodman's and find some.

Both are awesome...tough to choose between the two. Like to add that both seem, at least to me, to get even better with a year on them. Holding some over to see what another year does.

Thanks! I usually hit up a store in Wilmot as it's closer to my house. I'll give them a call.

Y2K is a very hoppy American Barleywine, borderline dipa. I bought a bunch last year in Chicago because I have never had it, and hadn't seen it anywhere in IL before. I will gladly trade you Y2K for BBBW, I think I have at least a 4 pack from last year still.

Y2K is a very classic barleywine. We compared it to a number of other different barleywines, but this style is so different stylistically. The least favorites of the group we tasted was DFH Olde School. A 2013 Bigfoot was in the middle of the pack. The top two were Y2K and Rogue Old Crustacean. The OC was from 2010 and was slightly better than Y2K, but there two were very similar.

I got to try Arctic Devil Midnight Sun and CW BBBW on back to back nights. Arctic Devil was really great and the whiskey barrel aging made a great pairing. BUT the CW BBBW I liked by far the most. That beer is absolutely magnificent. Best beer that comes from the state of WI in my opinion.
