Isn't the Beer Dabbled Winter Carnival also scheduled for January 24th? Time to start those ISO: CW17 proxy threads.

If anyone needs a proxy, I potentially can help out. I have a buddy coming with who could do it (I'm already extending my services). I can be the intermediary and take responsibility for everything. My guess is they would do it for a bottle, or at least for the right to buy a couple.

Let me know soon and I can coordinate.

    Cheers

A friend and I are heading out to CW for the party this weekend and I am pretty stoked, should be good times. For those of you that have been before...a couple questions.

    1. Is there, at any point, a bottle share component to this? I see that this year there will be no waiting outside, so would it be worth it to bring a couple bottles of something share-worthy? (thinking hotel maybe?)

    2. We are planning to take the shuttle to the event and then back to the hotel, but if we shuttle over, we will have all our bottles...wondering what others do about this. I am not interested in hauling a bag/box/whatever they give them to us in around from 3-10 as I enjoy the party itself. Ideas?

    3. Once the party ends at 10, is there a known after party? I am far removed from my college days, but I got a green light from the wife and kid to go to a beer release party in a neighboring state, not sure I will want to end my night at 10. Any good local spots that people have hit in the past? Any other breweries in the area?

Thanks all in advance for any tips or advice to make this weekend as awesome as possible.

    1. Yes. For the past five years there has been a bottle share in the brewery during the party, but I haven't seen any official reference from CW to the bottle share aspect this year. I'd assume it's still OK but tread cautiously. And depending on who you meet/who your friends are, there are after-party shares...if you can still walk to them.
    2. We always drive in, pick up our bottles, go drop them at our hotel, then take the shuttle. That way I don't have to worry about my bottles at all. Others go stash them in the car.
    3. See point 1. Guu's on Main is a good bar, but I'm not local, so I don't know any others.

Drink lots of water. And it does look about 25 degrees warmer than the next 'warmest' Anni party I can recall!

Go to the Great Lakes thread and all questions should be answered there, but to answer your questions...

    1. Depending on what hotel you are at, there most likely will be a share. There were shares the last two years at the brewery. Don't know about this year but I'm sure there will be bottles shared

    2. You are kind of SOL on this one, either drive your car, fill it up with beer and catch the shuttle back. Or haul your beer around with you.

    3. You will be drunk after drinking CW beer for 7 hours. You will not need an after party. If you are looking for one, check the hotel you are staying in. It is Wisconsin, there are bars everywhere. As for breweries, O'so is one in Plover

Figured I throw this out one last time. If anyone needs a proxy, hit me up ASAP!

Where is everyone staying? We are doing Holiday Inn (Convention Center), might bring a couple of bottles along for the ride.

Was Seventeen "double barrel aged"(aged in two different spirit barrels and then blended) this year? Heard this rumor last year and no one has mentioned it since that I have heard...

It is super good! I was going to sell 3 or 4 to friends but not after I tasted it.

I spoke with the brewer last night and Seventeen is a blend of two beers. First beer is a rebrew of 1414 and the second beer is a big stout called Fat Elvis aged in 25 year barrels.

I was told the same...and Fat Elvis was the base for Space Ghost, I believe. Barrels ranged from 12-25 years.

Drove about ten hours round trip yesterday for the release. We only stayed for a couple of hours but had a decent time. It was nice to try some of their more rare beers on tap as the better bottles seemed to sell out shortly after we got there around 315. I am guessing the line formed super early? Anyway, we decided to grab our few taps then we picked up our allotments last. No line as of 5pm so that was the quickest line I've ever been in for sure. Overall, good first trip to CW. Hard to say if I could've spent a whole day there with a limited tap list (had no interest in stuff I could pick up on the shelf in iowa) but would probably go again.

Except for about 45 minutes of my drive it had us go through some sketchy twisty back roads. Is there no straight interstate option coming from Iowa? Or did the quickest Google option eliminate some interstate?

I bet I know the section you mean; was it the section exiting 151 and heading up toward Sauk City? (Assume you took this route and eventually did end up on I-39 -I think is the interstate- up toward Amherst?) I've done this in the dark before (though heading back this way) and I do remember some windy, county roads.

1414 was 14 months in 14 year barrels...and if fat elvis was in 25 year barrels...something must have been in 12 year barrels right?

The way it was explained to me it was 2 base stouts (the base stout for 1414, and the Space Ghost base stout - Fat Elvis) and they were aged in barrels ranging from 12 to 25 years. I don't know which stouts were in which barrels or how they were blended.

You are right on the original 1414. I should have clarified they brewed the 1414 base and this time was put in 12 year barrels and fat elvis was placed in 25 year barrels and then blended. He also said that they are going to do a two bottle release where they are going to bottle those two beers and be sold as a pair so people can try them on there own.

Also in awesome CW news the old barrel warehouse is now an all sour barrel warehouse with a bunch of new sours coming out and he said that some will hit distro.

My two cents on the event:

Pros - the bottle pick up was awesome. Little to no waiting, in, out, good. Well done! There were a fair amount of brews on tap, so that was great as well. Ticket prices and pours were fine, even on my small pours, I never felt cheated. The new building meant no one waiting outside....awesome.

Cons - Limited stuff was gone by 3:15 and the party started at 3:00 wtf? That was pretty bunk. Either too much was given to VIP peeps, or by limited they really meant, we hardly have any. That place was crazy packed. By 5:00 it was impossible to move about in the warehouse with the music in it without having someone jack your beer all over the place. Shoulder to shoulder...that was nuts. By 5:00 I saw people that already had no business being near alcohol and had they been in a regular bar they would have been bounced. Many overly drunk peeps. I watched CW employees have to take cigs away from people trying to smoke inside, watched a chic punch a dude in the nuts and try to start a fight with him, and watched some guy that could barely stand he was so drunk, drop his bottle allotment and shatter some of them. All that was at 5:00!

Our group hung out for a few hours, enjoyed a few brews we could not otherwise get, and then took off to enjoy some more calm fun downtown in Steven's Point.

Overall, a pretty fun event. I'd do it again, although I would put more effort into setting up an organized bottle share at the hotel vs the free for all that was going on at CW.
