I have had this curious question in reference to how these areas of the country have changed in the way they have perceived and achieved the level of craft beer. And as well in asking this question in a most respectable manner.

I have traveled to 43 states before my craft beer journey, and have always noted social parameters or customs as you will. As we speak I am working in the Big Horn Mountains were I serve the many citizens of North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, and sometimes Canada.

What influenced the change now that some of these areas are producing very awesome beer in a time before as to do so was, and to put it bluntly, was to be made fun of and such.

I ask this because while I was not in the know then as some of our veterans here are, I would have liked to contribute to the rise and love of craft beer but to do so would have been made difficult with the previous mentalities. I would not forgive myself if I was to say I do not feel some sort of anger or let down as to why I have been at the wrong place at the wrong time. I think the number one example would be when I lived in Ashburn Virginia were at the time, no craft was present but only AFTER I left it emerged. Sometimes this is the way it goes. That is why since I am going to go for my Cicerone certificates, I am going to make a habit to absorb and immerse myself in my local area.

    Thoughts?

I am trying to think how to word it. Basically I was curious how regions of the country that I may have thought rejected craft beer have now come to make some great beer. Unless I have it all wrong and states as mentioned above have been always willing to embrace craft..

I agree - hard to find a question here. I think he was speaking in the Social Customs of the Big Horn Mountains - of which I am not accustom.

Yes including the Big Horns but mostly the regions of the Mid West/Great Northern. Hmm the question if it is valid, is how to these areas changed to accept craft beer or if I am misjudging these areas. Yeah the one time I make a thread I am dead tired now lol

I think craft beer is booming everywhere in the US the last few years, and if you go to revist a place now vs. 5 years ago, most likely there is more and better craft beer to be found.

I can't speak for Canada, North or South Dakota or Iowa, but Minnesota, Michigan, and Ohio have been pumping out high quality beer for a long time. Wait, what is the question?

If I'm getting it right, OP wants 1) ideas on how to spread the gospel of craft beer and 2) OP is curious as to how the rise of craft beer happened in certain areas of the country and how people accepted brews from other places besides macros.

Craft beer is growing everywhere because it's good and it makes money and it has a high coolness factor.

It wasn't just a recent boom.

There was a boom (or bubble) in the 90's and then many places went bust. Then a sort of middle period until mid 2000's when things accelerated again, and accelerated even more rapidly in the last few years.

My knowledge of beer history in Michigan is pretty lacking, but I can say beer has been brewed here for some time (Strohs was local) and the soil and climate in Michigan is darn near perfect for growing all the ingredients needed for quality beer or wine.

    Short version: Michiganders love alcohol

I think what the OP is trying to ask is has any state really been far even as to producing beer to taste or even go seem to do taste more like craft?

I can agree. I've been further even more decided to travel Midwest and need to go taste more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided taste as much to have craft beer for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to taste Midwest craft and even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to live craft that he go want to do taste more like. It's just common sense.

Not sure if this helps but:

Here in Texas where the red-neck Bubba factor is off the charts, the Bud Light/Miller Lite crowd is strong and fierce and obviously resistant to change.

That crowd has not hurt our craft beer/small brewery scene at all -- in fact, Texas' craft beer surge is so big now that many of those BMC drinkers are finding themselves peeking around corners and glancing when nobody's looking at all these awesome tap handles and bottle labels we have in-state. There's still a solid fundamental resistant to beers that are "too bitter" but because our Texas brewers are embracing so many various styles, people are finding things they like and learning that trying new things is fun, and it's made the surge in Texas beer about as much fun as anything we've had going on in state in some time.

As to how it happened? Texas natives building Texas businesses supported by Texans. Saint Arnold, Real Ale, Karbach, No Label, Buffalo Bayou, Jester King, Deep Ellum, Rahr & Son's, Martin House, Community, Lakewood ... it goes on and on and on. Austin Beerworks, 8th Wonder, Southern Star -- New Republic here in Bryan-College Station even. These companies are the reason why craft beer has exploded in Texas. We, like all regions, support our own, and we now have our own beer to support.

I waited for this for 30 years and about 15 years ago it began to really catch on and started moving up to now it is catching on fire. I used to travel 50 miles to buy craft beer in a plastic milk gallon from a place called Hoster's 20 or so years ago. I agree with Premo88 about Texas, Dallas was a good place to be when they started getting crafty. Michigan also became a mecca. Look at the beers on the shelf of your best beer store and see where they came from and they all sprang up out of a distinct distaste for American Swill. Keep going. Stop in Yellow Springs, Ohio at the Brewery for some fine beers. If you let me know, I will buy some. Watch out, Springs is full of old Hippies like me.
