Hard to go wrong with Saison Dupont-- not overdone and feel less (?not) funky than some American efforts.

I think it is prudent to start with a benchmark when "test riding" a foray into a different style.

Stone's Saison is in no way sour, or really funky either. Siason Dupont and Hennepin, among others don't really have a funky horse blanket flavor either. Just a distinct yeast character that does not have any Brett or wild yeast if that is what you are looking for. As mentioned Tank 7 is really good, and has more of a hoppy character that you might like. Boulevards new Collaboration 4 is great as well. Which is more fruity ester like, spicy, and slightly phenolic. Maybe a little more musty than some of the others mentioned.

Yeah. didn't get any horse blanket, funk... but left me with major stomach distress. Very good going down. The after affects were the issue.

I'll have to look for Saison Dupont here in NYC. Thank you very much for all the suggestions. Tank 7 I don't think I've seen here in NY.

I agree with starting with Saison Dupont (as it's just a lovely goddamn beer).
Boulevard Tank 7 (not here in NY but you can get over the line in NJ) and Ommegang Hennepin for compare/contrast...

Goose Island's Halia is really nice. Not too funky and a little sweet with the addition of Georgia peaches. I'm not a huge fan of saisons, either, but this one really, really impressed me.

You must have had it fresh. I agree with the others that you should try Saison Dupont. Boulevard Tank 7 is another good one you should try.

Id also go with DuPont,,, and if you get pretty things Jack D'or is a favorite and easy drinking,
once you get into saisons there are many great ones and they pair great with many foods

That sucks, was unaware that Boulevard was not in NY. Dupont and Hennepin for sure then.

Saison Rue from The Bruery... wonderful full saison fermented with brett. but remains pretty clean. didn't get any tart or horse blanket. drinks like a golden strong with more spicy profile

...or trade for a Funkwerks Saison from Funkwerks in Colorado..... really amazing light, drinkable saison....like a rustic wheat with spicy gingery finish , no brett in this one

If you can get it, try Prairie Standard. It has the slight funkiness, but it has a nice hop presence as well. This is what turned me onto the style. I am in a similar situation to you, where I absolutely love IPAs/DIPAs, and my first couple saisons did not impress me. Prairie Standard just bridged that gap for me I guess, because now I love saisons.

you don't have to like saisons. don't let anyone make you do something you don't want to do

Here is a little known saison that I really enjoyed.....Le Merle (the blackbird) from Left Coast Brewing Co. in San Clemente, CA, it's delicious and reasonably priced, comes in a cage and cork bottle, 1 pint 9.4 ounce, like $8.00 or so.
