    Hello,

I will be traveling to Charleston May 29 - June 1 from Chicago, and I'm looking for suggestions of things to pick up. Won't have much time to drink at establishments, so I'm specifically looking for bottles/cans/growlers to take home. Only current plan is to stop by Westbrook. I will be staying in Isle of Palms at the Wild Dunes resort. Anyone know of any good bottle shops near there? Do I need to plan a trip to Westbrook or should I be able to find most of their offerings on the shelves?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

After looking at Westbrook's site it appears that Mexican Cake will be out in May. Any idea if I'll have a shot at that while I'm in town?

Last year, it came out on Memorial Day weekend. The year before, it was in early May. There's no telling until they make it. Since you are coming later in the month, you do have a MUCH better chance at scoring some. Since you will be staying in IOP, you won't be far from 'Bottles' in Mt. Pleasant, which is a locally owned shop similar to Total Wine (we also have one of these). They'll have plenty of local stuff you can pick up there. Also, it would be well worthwhile to go across the bridge into Charleston and hit up the Charleston Beer Exchange.

House of Brews is also in Mt. Pleasant, just down the street from Bottles.

Check out this website for all things beer in Charleston http://chsbeer.org/places. Served as a nice guide when I have visited. Hard to say whether bottles of MC will be available during your stay. I was there shortly after the release last year and there were no bottles to be found anywhere, but a few craft beer bars had it on draft (Craftsmen and Closed for Business). Charleston Beer Exchange is a must stop. Guys are really cool and helpful. Really nice selection. I've talked beer with them and they've been known to pull out some "rare" offerings out of the back for me. They also fill growlers. At Westbrook you'll find year-rounds like Gose, One Claw, DIPA, lots of Evil Twin etc. and swag, with the occasional nice treatment. Didn't find a whole lot as far as bottles during my travels there, mostly solid local stuff on draft to be had. To me, Charleston is more of a food/cocktail destination

I don't know your taste in beer but I've had just a couple of the Palmettos. Charleston Lager and Amber ale. Unfortunately I wouldn't consider either one a beer to write home about.

True, but the Espresso Porter is quite good.

Holy City and Coast brews are pretty solid

After just visiting Charleston, I was pleasantly surprised by Holy City beers. They don't seem to get much respect compared to COAST and Westbrook but I thought they were very solid. In particular, I thought that the Yeast Wrangler DIPA (available in six--pack cans) was an excellent, balanced version of that style.

Go to Coast while you're there. Good stuff there especially if you'll be there during Boy King or BA Blackbeerd season.
