The Charleston Crab House on Wappoo Creek has long been a favorite of my wife's and mine. For years, we have stopped in regularly and enjoyed supper sitting in the bar - good food, great service, relaxed atmosphere, a lot of locals, spectacular view. We went there last night, not having been in several weeks, and were surprised to find that the bar had been expanded and completely remodeled. Besides the larger bar and new look, the biggest change is that they now have four draft beer taps through which they plan to rotate local craft beers. As we sat down, Jill, the bartender, knowing I like IPA's and am okay with higher ABV beers, was at our table with a sample of Holy City Brewing's Overly Friendly IPA. It was the first time I had tried it and I liked it. I stuck with that through my meal. Jill told me the beer rotation would soon include Westbrook IPA, a favorite of mine, on tap! The Charleston Crab House menu is seafood oriented, but includes a variety so that everyone can find something to enjoy. It is a a favorite of locals and a comfortable, friendly place to have a few, eat and enjoy the view.
As many times as I have eaten at the Crab House, I have never had the Buffalo Oysters. I will give them a try.
You mean the touristy place on JI that sells a bunch of fried non-local seafood? I don't want to knock what you like, but I ate there when I first moved to SC in 2008 and thought it was awful. With all of the amazing places in Charleston for beer and seafood, why are you advertising the crab house? Even Bowen's Island has a much better and more local selection of seafood, and an excellent selection of local craft beer on tap. Maybe this place has completely changed in the last few years, but I just don't see them doing an about face on food quality.
That place is blah. Atmosphere is great. Food is decent. Much better choices for local seafood. I live 2 minutes from that place and can't remember the last time I went. Now great news about the bar and local brew being served out there.
