Didnt want to start a new thread, but the one I was following got locked. My family is coming down April 13-19. Cant do beer only trip, but want to hit some highspots. Local input appreciated!! Charels Towne Fermentory is on my list as is Edmund's Oast for visits and some crowlers. If there is time for a 3rd, what would you choose Im hoping to do some bottle shopping too and ship stuff back to my house before we leave. Best places to pick up local stuff beyond the breweries? Finally, do most restaurants have a decent selection of local choices available or should I be prepared for lesser selection when eating out around town? Also, I may be able to bring a few cans of New England stuff, maybe Tree House in case anybody wanted to do a small trade or even just a small share event. I am unsure of volume I can bring due to airplane and luggage restrictions etc. But if interested, Beermail me and we can talk. Thanks in advance!
Personally I'd skip everything and focus on going to Charles Towne a bunch. They're so good and could use max support really, they're the best of both worlds super humble with some of the best beer in the SE. Also Edmund Oast is pretty average, rather hit Revelry. Just my experience/opinion though, maybe things have changed. Have fun in Charleston.
I’m gonna disagree with the poster above and say definitely hit Edmunds Oast Brewing, and then Edmunds Oast Exchange which is also downtown for package. Commonhouse and Westbrook would be my next 2 favorites if you can get of downtown.
Westbrook is chill and the dudes behind the bar are usually cool with you opening cans/bottles and sharing. Atleast that's been my experience before. They've also got a pretty extensive on-site bottle list if you don't care about $$$ and want to tick one of the BA cakes.
Thanks for starting this thread! I’m still confused why some threads get locked down. I was following the other Charleston thread and it was active, current, and full of great info! Anyway, I’m heading there the week before you and would also love to know of any ‘must not miss things to do’. Beer, and especially, real, non touristy soul food. Thanks all!
I don't know why the first post didn't work but I mentioned trying SOL restaurant in Mt. Pleasant. That place is great and the draft selection is good. I love the mud pluff beer down there.
Just returned from Charleston this past weekend. Really enjoyed Charles Towne, Edmunds Oast (the brewery location). I thought Revelry was awesome, they have a nice rooftop bar as well and check out their sour program a block away at"the Hold." All the staff was super friendly and we found ourselves going there to close out the night often.
Charles Towne Fermentory is a must visit, and they often release cans on Saturday (at a much better price than growlers). Check their social media for details. Westbrook is definitely worth a visit if your in the Mt. Pleasant area. In addition to pricey brewery only bottles, they also keep a good selection of their current offerings on tap. Edmund's Oast Exchange is a great bottle shop, and I would go to Edmund's Oast Restaurant, which is connected to the Exchange, before going to the brewery. However, the Total Wine in West Ashley and Bottles in Mt. Pleasant both have very good beer selections (just check can/bottle dates). I've found some Charles Towne Fermentory beers on tap at restaurants and almost all places will have a good selection of local beer (try 2 Claw). Many restaurants post their beer menus on their websites. If you're staying on Folly, check out The Barrel. It's an outdoor beer bar that usually has some good stuff on tap. It's very dog friendly, so be prepared to deal with some mutts running around. Charleston really is a beer lover's paradise, so most likely you'll find something you like no matter where you go.
Hit up Charles Towne Fermentory for their Imp Stout bottle Release and total wine for other in house consumables so far. Gonna try to hit edmund oast exchange today. Also staying very close to twisted cypress, so see myself grabbing pints there too. Good beering so far. Thanks for guidance and tips above!
When I hit up Charles Towne Fermentory, they only had about 3 cases of bottles left for each type. I doubt they have any left by now, but I am only speculating. I will add they had GREAT communication via Facebook with questions. Has any other BA stopped in since Sunday?
Commonhouse has been killing it lately and Westbrook still has some pretty good stout bottles available. Swinging by later to snag their new ultra fruited sour IPA.
Was in town yesterday and picked up everything they released this past weekend. There looked to be about 10-12 bottles of each up on the counter when I left. Was pleasantly surprised they still had some.
