Mike? He hasn't served beer in the tap room for more than a year (actually I don't think he ever served beer). If there were only two people there on a Friday, you must not have visited since 2012. I am not sure how a local can be biased on tap room environments. Freehouse and Westbrook have clean newer tap rooms. Coast is basically a hot warehouse. I love Coast beer, but hanging out there in summer is rough. Coast and Westbrook are on a similar level quality wise. They both lack a nice variety of beers on tap right now. Anyways, I have to question the palate of any BA that says Westbrook regular beers are better than the seasonals and one-offs. Shane's Big DIPA was an amazing beer. Mexican Cake (once an anniversary beer) continues to impress even non beer lovers. Orange Bliss was great. Not to mention the Old Time beers.

Do the local breweries fill growlers that aren't their own? Specifically thinking of Westbrook and COAST, but who knows?

Yes! I know Coast and Westbrook do for sure.

Yes. It has been a looong time since Mike was pouring beers. Like I said, it was long enough ago that when we were there at 5 on a Friday, we'd pretty much be the only people there. It's just too crowded in there for me now, but kudos to them for getting more people into the brewery and selling a metric shit ton of beers. It's just a personal choice as to where I'd rather spend my time. Yes, it's hot at Coast, but if you're going to grab a beer and fill a growler or two, the heat is just part of the deal. I don't sit at the brewery from 11-2 on a Saturday. I'm there for maybe 30-45 minutes.
All of our palates and tastes are different. I thought Shane's was boozy and hot. Mexican Cake doesn't do it for me, and I thought Orange Bliss was a mess. I guess I like my stouts pretty tame, like Blackbeerd, FIS, Kalamazoo, etc. I've never been a fan of flavory-type beers. I didn't like the Old Time beers either, and neither did the folks I sent them to. I don't see how anybody can "question another BAs palate." To each his own. We all prefer what we prefer. No right or wrong answers, nobody's palate is better or more sophisticated than the guy next to you. Cheers!

While everyone and everywhere have bad days, from my experiences, the people at Westbrook are fine. The only issues that there were, which I didn't really care about, are the kind that befall a successful, popular place: it can get crowded and run out of shit. And 3-4 people serving a crowd of 50 people, who also want to talk to the people serving there about the beer, since it's become a bit of a destination brewery can cause a wait, but I've never sat on an empty glass for an unreasonable amount of time, and empty glasses do make me cranky and impatient. I got there yesterday right as it opened and it was half full immediately.

LMAO. This guy....Flavor is bad. Why don't you stick to "Light" beers? I think everything you're saying is pure bs. Pretty sure your issue with them is personal and has nothing to do with their beers or the atmosphere.

LMAO... THIS GUY... The word " bad" never appeared in my post. I have no issues with anyone at all. I couldn't be more fired up about the state of beer in Charleston right now. Everything I stated above was an opinion. MY opinion. You clearly have yours. This is not an internet pissing contest, this is an open discussion forum. If I were into "light" beers, I probably would never have found BA. Are any of the beers I've mentioned above "light" beers?

I question anyone actively discouraging visitation to one of our local breweries. The only reason to do that would be if the beer was all horrible (see Southend). We get it, you like mellow beers. Most BA's do not and will love all the one off beers at Westbrook. The servers are all very polite, unless you are an asshole to them. It is ok to have personal opinions, but there is a time and place to share them. On a visiting Charleston thread asking for top beer places to hit probably isn't the best place to so this. Look, there are several Holy City beers that I don't like. That doesn't mean I am going to tell visitors to not visit the brewery or try the beers. As a local brewery, I want them to succeed and be celebrated for the things they do right. Instead of saying I don't like this beer and I wouldn't visit the brewery, I would say what I do like and to give them all a try. Charleston beer needs more positive vibes.

Why is it that every Charleston/Westbrook thread turns into this?

Seems easy enough to do this for SC also. But then again, we are talking about south carolinians so maybe using too many words are hard on you.

Its very clear that this thread is about Charleston, SC. Don't be stupid, it just wastes everyone's time.

OP never says anything about which Charleston he's talking about, and the first response could very well have headed off into the wrong state.
Maybe what's clear is that you lowlanders think everything is about you.

It's pretty clear which Charleston he's talking about. Look at his response after my recommendations post. Not sure what everyone's problem is with SC locals and Westbrook. But @rbradley is right, for some reason it always turn into this. You never see South Carolinians do what you guys do. Sorry that Westbrook is in Charleston. Besides, when somebody says Miami, you don't think of Ohio, do you? Same here and if he meant WV then it would've been included in his post.

Not to state the obvious, but no...it's not. Re-read the original post and tell me what about that screams SC to you.

Not sure what the difference is. If he meant SC then it would've been included in his post, no? You just assumed SC because that's where you are. Guarantee you that if you said the name 'Charleston' when in WV, not one damn person would think you meant SC. It's a matter of perspective.

I have no idea what you're talking about with the Westbrook comments.

I did work tasting room from Nov. 2011-Early 2012 (don't remember exactly, moved to the back Jan 2012 but still worked tasting room for a few months). I see where wemissmikey is coming from, he enjoys a classic stout, not a stout with additional flavors or whatever junk people love to throw in beers nowadays. Funny cause I like flavored stouts over classic but I'll never say he is wrong or has "bad taste" in beer, it's all personal taste. I wasn't a huge fan of mr. chipper but people love that stuff and I don't get it. Just like when I liked Shane B1 over B2 and I was the only one, everyone thought I was crazy. Who cares. Just go visit some breweries and have fun and come by House of Brews and grab a beer and relax outside.
