Champion Brewing makes some decent to very good beers. They have a special release bottle series that is usually very good, although expensive ($15/bottle).
http://www.vabeertrail.net/directory/categories/charlottesville-metro It's a decent place, I don't get over there as much as I'd like. That link should provide you with most of the craft scene related places. Highlights for me are Champion Brewery and Beer Run for all your bottle needs, plus some great food. 45 minutes or so west and you have us H'burg and little South is Staunton.
My hometown ... http://brewridgetrail.com/ for stuff outside the city. Champion, Three Notch'd and South Street in town. Beer Run is a nice store/taphouse/restaurant. http://www.beeradvocate.com/place/list/?city=Charlottesville&c_id=US&s_id=VA You're also within an hour of Richmond and other interesting places to drink craft beer.
.... and since you're coming in from out of state, check out Trinkin. Handy little site that works with a lot of the craft scene. You can look up what business have on tap before you leave the house. Covers C'ville, Richmond and Harrisonburg as well as Roanoke and Hampton.
Charlottesville is more than just a decent place, especially when it comes to beer. Where I have lived the past 9 years. There's 4 breweries in town. The highlights are Champion and Three Notch'd, Both put out very good beers. Champion runs 9 taps while Three Notch'd has 10-12. Both can a few beers with some limited releases in bottles. Beer Run as mentioned is easily the best spot for bottles. 15 minutes to the western side of the county you have a strip of about 15-20 miles of road (Brew Ridge Trail) with another 5 breweries including Devils Backbone (probably the most awarded brewery in the state) Starr Hill (widest distribution outside VA). Blue Mountain Brewery also puts out nice stuff and has a great restaurant. A cidery and distillery also located on this strip of road. Restaurants with the best tap selection are going to be Sedona Taphouse (45+ taps, 500+ bottles) and Mellow Mushroom (36 taps) best of luck with the move.
Not too far out of the way to hit Lickinghole Creek, which has been doing some great releases as well. All told, C-Ville isn't too shabby at all for craft. I'd be willing to bet that it's going to be a vast improvement over SC.
Ha! It's not a place I'd say is a "must-hit" if you're only in town for a weekend. But if @Csnow4 is going to be living in town a while, I'd recommend a stop at least once. Hell, could end up being your jam ... and more people going there may help thin the patio at BMB!
HA. I did not forget them on purpose. Just didn't want to stream off a list of every brewery in the area. WW has a great location and their property is very cool. Really impressed with Primal Instinct since it was released in cans.
Another great place for bottles is the Wine Warehouse on Hydraulic Road. Both Three Notch'd and Champion make very good beers with the occasional excellent one; I tend to like the taproom vibe at Champion a good bit more. It's more of a downtown crowd where Three Notch'd feels to be more of a UVA grad student scene. South Street gets forgotten about but they are also putting some very solid brews that are different from those out at Blue Mountain (same owners). Cvillian started off with awful beer that has gotten better (tasted several at beer festivals), but it's 50/50 if they will make it IMO.
