The reality is there aren't exactly any "cheap" options.

And for people making suggestions, the OP is in California

Bourbon barrel aged beers aren't something I personally want to drink on a regular basis.
After I get past the first couple of bottles in a row when I get some, its more like an occasional one a month treat for me that I really enjoy. Otherwise I'd grow tired or it.

So I run around picking up as much Backwoods Bastard as I can in November(12-16 bottles or so) and it lasts me for most of the year and doesn't break my bank.. I know its best fresh, but 6-7 months in the fridge/ac it does fine.

Foothill's People's Porter BBL - seen it as low as $6.99 for a bomber. $99 for a sixtel (which I get yearly)

Buy cases instead of 12oz singles, 4pks, or 6pks or bombers.

From experience I can tell you in the land of Pennsylvania where prices aren't always nice...

    1) I've paid between $15-17 for a 4pk of Founders Backwoods Bastard in the past, but was fortunate to find a case this year for $75.

    2) I've paid $28-30 for 4pks of BCBS in 2012/2013, but was very fortunate to find a case this year for $112 incl. tax.

    3) I've paid $15 for 4pks of DFH Olde School, but found a case for $82.

    4) I've paid $15 for 4pks of Weyerbacher Insanity, but find cases for $75.

If you're looking for value without (being lucky enough to find) buying a case of any BA brew, I'd suggest trying to find 4pks of Central Waters Barrel Aged brews, they're all good and Central Waters isn't packaging them in bombers and jacking up the unit cost.

Please don't take my response as a humble brag, it's not that.
I know I was lucky/fortunate to find cases of some of those beers mentioned.

    And tasty as hell.

I was in Syracuse last summer drinking full pints on draft of the stuff for about $5/each.
    I had two :grinning:

My question is, why would you want one, save your money and enjoy one that's worth buying.

Tell me please why this is a bad beer? For an everyday drinking bourbon-barrel aged beer that doesn't kill you on either ABV or sweetness this is an awesome beer and one of my go-tos. If you like bourbon barrel-aged beers and you don't like this one then something is wrong with you. The barrels are sourced sopping wet from Woodford's Reserve and Maker's Mark which I know no one else does. Not everyone wants a 13% bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout that puts you in a diabetic coma after drinking it.

As stated about 3 ppl in, the Schlafly Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout is quite bourbon forward (depending on the year) and around $11 or $12 tops for a 750. Age mellows it a bit and, while it's not the equal of BCBS or the like, it's a damn fine beer for a good price. It ages pretty well for 2-3 years as well (and Schlafly's oak-aged barleywine is awesome after 3-4 years, if not fresh).

    Bump.

As prices keep skyrocketing, it seems prudent to continue discussing which breweries are keeping it real.

I just picked up a Boulevard Imperial Stout bomber for $12.99, which seems reasonable -- at least in comparison to a few competitors.

Boulevard Impy Stout and BBQ are definitely some of the cheaper options. They also rule.

For me in upstate New York, Anderson Valley is the cheapest and easiest to get. $9.99 a bomber.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more mention of New Holland Dragon's Milk ITT. $16/4-pack is about the beat value you can get for a BA stout.

This. The Siren Noire is probably the best "cheap" BB Stout out there.
