I just got one today...for Peche N Brett. Because THAT'S how good traders treat people (the good trader is a regular, duh)
Though some folks would argue, based on taste, he got the better end of the deal. ;-) Serious question though and a smidge off topic. Can anyone name a stout where the fruit flavor tastes really authentic? One of the issues I usually have with fruited stouts like Cherry Rye, Backyard Rye, etc, is that the fruit tastes a bit sacharrine, medicinal, or one-note jammy. My perception as a non-brewer is that extracting enough fruit flavor to rise above the dark notes of a stout loses nuance. There's something (over simplification here) of a tradeoff between intensity of any given flavor and it's subtlety. Compare this to something like PnB at its peak or some of the De Garde fruited berliners - to go with local examples - and you can note the difference. Of course, peach / nectarine are two fairly delicate fruits so you're unlikely to see a "peach stout". The best examples of fruited stouts that I can think of really use the fruit as a undertone, a la Life is Like, than a forward element.
FT: Peche n Brett ISO: Cherry rye Not a huge cherry rye fan, but I thought Peche n Brett was nasty. Lol ....anyone who thinks opposite, PM me. Srs.
Yes! I agree with your take on the artificial-ness of most of these fruited stouts. This is why I did not enjoy Cherry Rye. Backyard was better for me, but that doesn't say much. Now Proprietor's on the other hand is my favorite beer (not just stout), hands down, and having had so much coconuts throughout my life in Asia and here, I can attest to the authentic taste of it in Prop. It just works so damn well with the beer.
good example of how so much of this is personal taste. for me, Cherry Rye is maybe my favorite beer ever, Backyard Rye was ok, and I didn't even want to finish the bottle of Prop I opened. it's bizarre bc I love eating berries but don't like coconuts or cherries. shrug.
