Living in NYS, I don't see many of these around. Last year I think I saw Goose Island with a Cherry Stout. When I came back to the shop the next day, both bottles were gone. What are some readily available cherry stouts? Especially in the NY area? A few years ago (and I can't remember the brewer) I had a chocolate/cherry stout on tap and it was awesome. Although, it may have been a cherry porter. Also, do these age as well as a regular stout, such as Ten Fiddy or FIS? Thanks!

Bell's makes a nice Cherry Stout but it is a seasonal (Winter). I have one bottle left in my refrigerator from my purchase this past winter. I have no idea how well this beer ages; I have always drank them without aging.

    Cheers!

Ellicottville makes a beer called Cherry Chocolate Bomb; I've had it a few times and really liked it.

This beer always carries some strong feelings from fellow BA's. I happen to be one who likes it. And I think it ages just fine...had one a few weeks ago that had over a year on it. Nice cherry flavor without being medicinal.

Completely agree with this one too. I've had a few bottles with about a year on them and have enjoyed each one. Though I would tend to try to drink within a few months. Great if you're looking for a tart cherry, not sweet cherry, stout.

Cherry Rye Bourbon County Brand Stout was released in 2012, and it's delicious. Good luck finding one, though.

I'm one of the ones on this site that doesn't care for this beer at all, but I'm at a loss to come up with an alternative...and to be fair, I've never aged it, maybe the tartness would soften?

I was at a Bell's tasting last year and the Bell's rep brought out an '08 Cherry Stout. It still tasted great to me with 6 years on it, which was surprising considering that Bell's website says "12 months shelf life."

I will say that there isn't any real improvement though... unless you have ideal cellar conditions, I wouldn't bother aging them that long. Other than Bells, there really aren't many worth picking up. I've searched far and wide for a decent alternative. The rest have been disappointing.

I've seen some, but never had one. Closest for me would probably be Spring House's Little Gruesome (PBJ Stout), but that's a far cry from cherry.

Oliver Ales makes a cherry wheat (Cherry Blossom Ale) that has been delicious served mixed with their Bishop's Breakfast stout or Modern Life Is Rubbish porter. I think last year they split batches of sour and sweet cherries, so real interesting to try to the cocktail with the different variants. Much preferred with the stout back.

Love to try more Cherry Stouts. Only one that I have seen and tried was the Bell's Cherry Stout at last years FW Invitational. Loved it (great with cup cakes!)...

Bell's Cherry Stout is damn near as bad as Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. I bought a 6er and the two I had were horrible. Drank one with a year on it - still bad. I would give the other 3 away but it would feel like a gag gift.

    Easily Bell's worst beer . . . nearly undrinkable.

Some folks like it and others don't.

If you guys are ever in Chicago, I'd be happy to take all of your old Bell's Cherry stouts off of your hands. Seriously.

I have had an Irish stout with cherries added at Bellwoods in Toronto, so I know cherry stouts have promise.

You can certainly try aging cherry stouts. If you really like a strong cherry flavor, I would recommend consuming them fairly fresh (aged ~2 years max). Fruit flavors typically are one of the first parts of a beer to fade. I think cherry tends to hold up better over time than some other fruits, but it still fades. Certain other fruit additives have a tendency to become astringent or medicinal if aged too long. The only way to know for sure is to try it though!

From New York State to boot.

It was also bottled for the first time this year too. Being a winter seasonal it will be difficult to find at this point, however.
