I am looking into getti g a chest freezer and I converting it into a kegerator. But I have a couple questions. I want 2 with the option of 3 kegs to be able to go into the freezer( probably will start out at 2 for a while)...what size chest will I need? I am sortof confined with space so the smaller the better. Also, when I install the wood boards to the keezer, does it compromise the cool temperature inside the freezer? Thanks for all the help!
That all depends on how the freezers are layed out. The home brew talk site has some information about people's experience with various models. IIRC there's even a sticky with downloadable keg 'foorprint' templates to take along and do 'layouts' at an appliance store. It doesn't compromise temp, but it takes more energy to maintain that temp, due to leakage. But you can insulate the boards (i.e. the collar). I used stryofoam sheets from home depot or lowes.
I just don't know if there was a general amount of storage for how many kegs you desire like 1 keg, the general footage is _______, 2 legs is ______.
I have a 7.2 cu ft chest freezer that holds 4 cornies comfortably + a few six packs on the shelf above the compressor. This size freezer is typically about 37" wide - about the same as a standard refrigerator/freezer. They're designed to hold freezing temperatures, so the slight loss of efficiency caused by a wood collar is not an issue from a temperature perspective.
remeber a full keg (half barrel) is about 150 pounds or more. this is not something you will want to dead lift 3 and half feet into the air. if you only want corny kegs or even sixth barrels then a chest freezer is practicle. this page at micromatic will give you all the dimensions needed. you will need to add at least one inch per keg width and about 5 additional inches ideally on top to allow for the coupler, hoses and other crapola. chest freezers are very efficient btw. unlike a front door fridge or freezer, the cold air stays put when the door is opened. which is why the grocery store can display ice cream etc. in open top freezers. you will still want to insulate the collar, but it's not really much of a concern. As said here, it really depends on what brand, not just cubic ft. I had a 7.2 cu ft freezer but mine will only fit 3 cornies without a collar.
Nope, it's nowhere near that easy. That's why I told you where to look for info on what various models can hold and template tools to figure it out for any particular freezer you happen to be standing in front of.
