Im heading to Chicago (from STL) for the first time in a long time. We're staying at Renaissance Downtown. I'm kind of a stout or nothing drinker. Any suggestions (ideally but not necessarily walking distance) of bottle shops/brewpubs/restaurants/bars w great beer lists?

Thanks in advance. I'm sure this is as common of a request as it is in the STL forums, but I didnt see any quickly for Chi.

Three Floyds seems like a must stop at place on the way to Chi from STL, but they seem to be IPA only right now.

    Stout or nothing? In July?

It may not be the selection available during “stout season” but you can still find stouts at the good beer bars in the city.

In walking distance of your hotel, I’d say the best options are Monk’s and Timothy O’Tooles. Both keep their lists updated online, so I recommend checking before you go. If you venture into the south loop, Jackson Tavern or First Draft often have solid lists too.

Otherwise, this thread is a great resource: https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...icagoland-resource-thread-spring-2018.562877/. Especially the “Highly Recommended Beer Bars” section for what you are looking for. Local Option in particular always seems to have a strong selection of stouts and BA brews.

For bottle shops near where you are, Binny's Grand will be the biggest selection.

    Cheers, enjoy the visit.

FYI, 3 Floyds is not on the way to Chicago from St. Louis. It's about an hour past Chicago, depending on day & time for traffic.

Otherwise, use @BSiegs advice and check out that other thread. It's pretty comprehensive and you can follow up with questions in there so that future visitors can also see feedback & more tips.

If I had a stout itch (and it didn’t matter if I was driving or taking Uber) I’d drive out to Mikerphone/Une Anne or hope Goose Fulton puts on something cool that day.

Hey Greg, I will strongly second both Timothy O'Toole and Monk's Pub as having great beers on draught although I think Monk's is probably closer to your hotel. Both are very walkable though. If you haven't done it already do yourself a huge favor and download the BeerMenus app. It's the best way to see what bars/restaurants are near you and what they have on tap. Monk's and Timothy O'Toole's both do a great job at keeping their listings up to date (although stouts in Chicago in July might be limited). Untappd has a location feature that'll tell you what's around and on tap too (if you are on Untappd). Both places I recommend have great burgers. Two of my favorite's burgers downtown are Monk's Maple Bacon Brisket Burger and Timothy O'Toole's Chicago Fire Burger (if you like things on the spicy side). Enjoy your visit!!

Thanks! Sounds like some combination of Monk's, Timothy O'Tooles, Goose Island, Binnys and Mikerphone, should happen. Thanks all! Spiteful is a maybe.

I would 2nd the Une Annee recommendation, especially if you're heading to Mikerphone. They are around 20-25 minutes apart. I was there Saturday and tried a couple of great stouts (El Zacaton was my favorite).

Three Floyds will probably add about an hour and a half to your trip. Its about a 30 min detour cominng from STL, as you’ll already be south, and will need to head into Indiana.

However, because of traffic, unless it’s after 9pm, you’re looking at about an hour from FFF to downtown.

It’s still worth it, as it’s a great place, but it’s not a quick detour by an means.

Also, FFF usually has at least a couple of stouts available.

Thanks. I forgot about ChI traffic. Mikerphone looks to be 30 min or so from our hotel. Wonder if we should just go there instead of three floyds. I really only have fri eve to get a few beers. We're doing half marathon on sun and i dont drink day before that distance.

Mikerphone's probably a worse bet, traffic wise, especially on a friday evening, considering you'll be having to go North, which means you'll be in traffic a long while.

If you only have 1 day, i would say, go to Goose Island (check the webpage, and see what location has a better taplist for stouts), and then hit up a decent bar. Monks, Banger's and Lace, and Link's Taproom are all either walking distance, or a $12 uber from your hotel.

And don't forget our tolls. Bring plenty of cash and coins if you'll be driving the freeways.

Edit: And Goose Island Clybourn Brewpub will be busy tonight. You did mention stouts in July right?

Tolls?! I hate driving in STL, it sounds like Chi is going to be way worse.

That Goose Island event looks ideal except its tonight and not next Friday.

related, is the barrel house only for events? The website appears that way. If so is Fulton the only location? Website looks like other locations are outside of Chi.

Bangers and Lace is looking good too, foodwise.

My kid lives in Chicago(Lincoln Park) I drive in 1-2X a month from MI.

I’d recommend Mikerphone over 3Floyds, from my experience I always seem to get to Mikerphone and backfaster(that’s just me)

Try Goose Island Fulton St. lots of time they have vintage stuff for purchase. Pipeworks has a lot of BA stuff to go for purchase.

If you like Pizza I like Parlor Pizza and they sometimes have some decent stouts on tap.

Beermiscous is a decent bottle shop along with Capone’s.

Agree with everyone else on checking Timothy O Tooles tap list.

There’s Goose Island Fulton, which is just a taproom, but it’s probably your best bet to find something special.

Goose Island Clybourn is the original location, and they are a full service restaurant/brewpub. They’ll have more standard fare, but it’s definitely a great place. If you’re looking for stouts though, I’m not sure what the taplist will look like.

The barrel house is only for events.

I would check out Local Option. They always have a bunch of stouts on even in the summer.
