I've been looking into where I might be able to find a half barrel keg for an event and figured this forum would probably have some good suggestions. I know it's easy to find kegs of stuff like Coors or Bud Light but I'm asking primarily because I'd like to get something less terrible if possible. I've found a handful of breweries that sell 1/6 barrel kegs so far but not too many that sell half barrel kegs. Anyone know any taprooms or breweries that have larger sized kegs of a beer that's basic/crowd-pleasing but still actually drinkable for a neckbeard weirdo?

I believe Revolution does 1/2 barrels of their regulars occassionally (currently they have Anti Hero available). Pretty sure Half Acre only offers 1/6 barrel. Outside of that, I've used Grand and Western Liquors plenty in the past to get some local 1/2 barrels at reasonable prices. Not sure what they have available these days, but worth looking into.

Revolution has half barrels of Anti-Hero available, I thought they had more than that, but it looks like everything else is 1/6 barrel.

    EDIT: I'm too slow!

Old Irving Brewing, on the northwest side of Chicago, sells 1/2, 1/4, and 1/6 barrel kegs of their "year-round beers". Don't know for sure which beers that includes. But I do know that Della, their Kölsch-Style Ale is always available, so I assume that would be a year-round beer. To me, it's a little more full-bodied than German kölsches I've had. It's a super-easy drinking beer. Tastes like something you'd get from Dovetail.

I would call a brewery you are interested in and ask. I imagine a lot of them have them whether posted or not and would be more than happily sell them to you at retail vs cutting in distro/retailer.

Binny’s has quite a few to choose from in LP and Lakeview but I haven’t purchased in a while

On top of what everyone else has said, you can also stop in Binny's and ask to see a keg list, or Beer on the Wall (Park Ridge, Arlington Heights) if you're in the suburbs.

If it’s 1/6 or 1/4 barrels there are lots of Chicago area breweries that do those: half acre, rev, old Irving, alarmist, une annee, etc. As far as beer stores beer temple and beer on the wall are the two best places for craft smaller kegs as far as variety of choices and customer service. My experience in the past when trying to get a 1/2 barrel is binnys. With enough lead time they can get you a wide assortment of macro craft beer. I almost always end up getting two-hearted in these situations though

All good suggestions here. If you find your options for 1/2 barrel from breweries too limited, why not get 2 or 3, 1/6 barrel kegs? One crowd pleaser and two of your choice
