Hey man, I'll line up for a beer. I've done it many times and I'll do it some more. But a relatively small shop posts on their instagram with not really that many followers for a beer that I didn't think would be all that insane to acquire? I thought I had a shot. Hell, I got one last year at Standard Market a couple days after they got it.

I for one am tired of all the bottle hunts ... i don't need a cellar full of whales, i just want to try everything i can.

For this reason, i wish places would focus less on silly bottle release events and focus more about distributing kegs of their 'special' brews to as many local watering holes as possible. Local businesses would benefit, places like Binny's would receive fewer phone calls from people looking for a single product, and more people would have a chance to try things.

A good example of this is Prop '16 ... i chose not to wait in line on Black Friday, i missed out on the later drop, and i'm not paying ridiculous secondary market prices ... but i've been able to drink it 4-5 times in the last couple months because Goose has been distributing kegs all around.

A simple social media post would have helped for me- that's how they released the info to begin with... I replied to their post about a half hour later and they hadn't responded. So I made the trip in only to find out I had missed it by a mile. Of course, this brilliant marketing stint worked on me as I left with a bomber and a create your own 6-er.

I think parabola is still worth searching out, especially if it will be in 12oz 4packs

Yeah, this is one of the things that I think Goose Island really does right in Chicagoland; on Black Friday it feels like if you get shut out then you've missed your shot, when in reality BCS in almost all forms is readily available for months afterwards.

Pretty sure it's 12 oz singles in an obnoxious box from the release thread and pictures.

Bottles and Cans is odd though - everything rare they get results in a line and sells out almost instantly. I tried going up there for Abraxas last year - showed up 30 minutes before they were releasing it and was told to not bother staying since they had already "sold out" to the people in line.

I wonder if it's because 1) it's one of the better beer shops in that particular area and 2) everyone has that same "it's a small shop, I probably have a better shot" mentality? I've only been there once or twice, and definitely would've thought B&C would be an easier place to grab stuff from, than, say a Binny's.

Yeah, I won't make that mistake again- fuck that place. Not my style. I'd RATHER get one from Binnys at this point. If there's one thing that really grinds my gears its some bottle shop idiot giving me attitude about trying to spend my money in their shop.

Yeah, I'd have to agree. I used to live around the corner from B&C and it made complete sense. But that was my last visit. Capone's and WLV can split my business.

Like the sign FFF puts up on their kiosk door that says when they're out of Zombie Dust? It's literally right in the customer's face as they open the door, and some of them still walk in, look at the board, don't see Zombie Dust up there, then proceed to ask the guy at the counter if they have Zombie Dust.

I feel like this warrants a snarky response

It seems like bottles and cans is getting more crap from people than they deserve. They opened at 11 and sold 18 bottles of beer quickly. The beer scene is silly and the people working there laughed about the absurdity of it all.

Stupid to shit all over a retailer when supply is so low and demand hilariously over inflated. Guys. Madagasgar is not THAT good. Its a fine BA stout but lets stop kidding ourselves that we need to be waiting in lines for it. Hell spend 10 extra bucks and buy the vanilla eclipse thats sitting around. Much better beer.

Vanilla Eclipse is absolutely not a better beer than Madagascar. And this was my original point. I didn't think there was going to be a line. I underestimated Chicago craft beer goons. I also don't think B&C only had 18 bottles. For one- 4 Hands didn't ship them a case and a half. If anything, they had 2 cases / 24 bottles. Maybe shop nerds held onto a couple. Who knows... Second, when I asked and was laughed out, the guy told me they "divided up the cases" and sold it out. Didn't sound like 18 bottles. And third- if they only had 18 bottles, or 24 bottles, they should have laid that information out in their post where they announced it. Instead, they post the bottle of Madagascar in front of what looks like 4-5 cases and say "limited". Once again, I say Fuck That Place.

The laugh I got was certainly not a laugh at the absurdity. It was a laugh directed at me for not knowing that Chicago beer idiots would like up in a small bottle shop before open for a BA stout.

Its all about supply though - almost any Binnys will likely get more than B&C would for a rare beer. Thats essentially what happened that time I went up there for Abraxas - they had 1 case to sell, so it was gone almost instantly. I think if I had such a small supply and ran a small shop like that I'd probably just put one or two out at a time in the evening to avoid the big lines following a public announcement, but what do I know?

Im not in any way bashing B&C - its a nice shop and they get some great stuff - I think part of it is just that they get such a small supply and the demand is high with it being the nicest place around in walking distance for a lot of people.

Distributors dividing cases amongst stores does happen all the time. A lot of the allotment amongst small stores is divvied up based on sales. So the small shop that I stopped in while trying to get a can of BA ten tidy - they carry Oskar Blues but don't sell much, so they got 2! cans of it and that was it.

Binnys is largely immune to this as the corporate side acts as a second layer of distribution over their stores. So Binnys might get 100 cases of Madagascar and then they'll divide it up amongst stores. Thats how LP always has a lot of rare beers - Binnys stocks its flagship store well. (the 100 cases was totally made up, I have no information on how many cases they got)
