Figured it was high time to kick this one off for the year.

Recently I have really, really enjoyed the lagers from Goldfinger Brewing. Their recent doppelbock and black lager releases were excellent.

Upcoming it looks like Seipps (& Metropolitan) are releasing Columbia bock in March:

Do they distribute to the city (or at all)?

We tried Tooth and Claw from Off Color and it was really good, surprised both of us how much we enjoyed it. Definitely want to try it again.

Chicago is blessed with a LOT of proper lager.

You have a lot of established breweries like Rev, HA, Metro, Dovetail, PDubs, spiteful, Hopewell, ect creating vast lager programs and then we have young guns like Art History, Roaring Table, Goldfinger making great stuff out of the gate. And now you even have hype breweries like Phase Three, Hop Butcher, Maplewood, Riverlands beginning to create nice one offs every few months.

and don’t forget breweries like Crystal Lake, Buckledown, and Pollyanna who have really got their core lager lineup defined/refined.

so much good lager out there right meow

Off Color and Great Central. Just crushed some GC Pils and they do some mighty fine work.

You should not be surprised. Their beers range from very good to great. Used to be my favorite Chicago brewery.

I think they were released a while ago but hadn't come on my radar. For those interested though, Begyle is selling BBA Pajamas right now from their shop. There's a vanilla and cinnamon/maple variant (I think this is the one they've had at release parties called "pancakes") available in mixed packs or single cans.

The cans say 2020 so they've probably been out for a while I just hadn't seen it.

Wasn’t surprised that it was a really good beer, (@FBarber introduced me to them last year and I look for them specifically now) we were really surprised by how much we enjoyed a Pilsner, that seldom happens as we generally stick with Stouts and IPAs. “Simple” lagers just don’t normally flip the switch, ya know? But that one did.

ell, I love the name. Thankfully, unlike the actual Fireside, it does not smell like cigarettes, urine, and BO. Compared to other local lagers, though, this isn’t doing much for me. It’s light-bodied and grainy with a slight “stewed veggie” aftertaste. With so many other excellent options, I doubt I’ll get this again.

I will agree with the second half of that statement. The first time they did that beer I bought it to reminisce. But you hold your tongue when you speak of the Fireside haha! It may have smelled like that but the many, many times seeing shows there and becoming friends with every band is priceless! Hell, who can say they saw AFI (as one of many examples) in a bowling alley! (But all with old school love!)

It’s hitting all of the Vienna Lager sweet spots for me. Just an outstanding beer.

I saw Ted Leo and the Pharmacists at the Fireside and it was arguably the best venue of the 12-13 different venues in Chicago at which I've seen TLRx. I have to find this beer now.

If anyone has a hankering for a nice dunkel (perfect for our typically lousy spring weather imo), I recommend Roaring Table's Dunkel. Great flavor. Picked up a single but going to be looking for a 4 pack now. They have been making some very nice lagers.

Picked up my single from Beer on the Wall. Not sure if you are in the city or burbs but here are their partner stores at this time (IG tags).
