In my mind, strong bitters are a different beast than ESBs, but I haven’t looked at the BJCP guidelines for about 20 years. I’ve always associated bitters as being British beers without needing to use “English”, so ESB always meant Fuller’s or something mimicking it.

But, I’m not that smart …. That said, almost time for a bitter (or a lager to get back on topic). I’ll keep my eyes out for the RT Pils!

    Cheers!

Esters should be present but not as intense as fullers I'm thinking. Didn't use fullers yeast so the ester profile will be a little different (more stone fruit than orchard fruit). Mix of maris otter and Munich for the base along with a blend of German and UK crystal/Cara malts. EKG and Mittelfruh hops throughout the boil.

This is very intriguing -- two of my favorite malts. I don't think I've ever heard of a recipe blending these two -- can't wait to taste the results.

The Goldings and Mittelfruh ought to compliment nicely, too.

Did you brew up test batches to get the proportions the way you wanted?

No test batches. That would require time that we do not have. EKG and Mittelfruh should work nicely together. Pretty delicate hopping with a BU in the mid 20s.

Made my first stop by Miskatonic and was highly impressed with their lager game. Czech Pils, Czech Amber, Czech Dark, Doppelbock, Schwarz....my kind of place!

I prophesied the end of Miskatonic when Hop Butcher stopped contract brewing there. That hasn't aged well, as I'm pretty sure they've added at least one new location since then!

Elmhurst Brewery has a great Czech Dark Lager on. It is really good!
