For what it's worth, bottled version of Chi PA will be a different beer than the draft version (looks like different hops).

edit: NBrock's comment popped up right while I was finishing this up.

Some may not even get it. In their last distro, Bloomingdale only got Milkstachio and no Mellotron. It probably depends on their proximity to HB

I believe all the binny's that were going to get it already got it. And sold out.

 Right back at you. People wanting a beer and seeking it out sometimes means it's a better beer. I've sent all the beers to my regular trade partners (always $4$) on the east coast and they share my sentiment on the beers. Everyone's taste buds are different, of course.

And god forbid people enjoy sharing beers with other friends outside their region.

I do enjoy the beers. But I don't sit around and drink 8 of the same beers. So I get to trade 4 of my Morning Fog for 4 DDH Double Mosaic Dream and 4 of my Juice is Loose for 4 DDH Mylar Bags. I couldn't do that with Reply Hazy. Reply Hazy is a throw-in, which I did. They were underwhelmed by Galaxy Bowl and Mellotron but absolutely loved Juicy and asked for more Juice is Loose after I sent it to them before. Now I get to enjoy 4 different, amazing beers instead of 2.

I also sent some of each to a friend in Tampa for some Civil Society and Last Buffalo in the Park. I have good friends spread over the country. We enjoy sending each other good beer.

Why couldn't you do that with reply hazy? I've received some nice stuff for RH. Some Hoof Hearted, Civil Society specifically.

They didn't particularly love GB or Mellotron. Personal preference for them, I suppose, but it was 3 different guys (3 different states). I think RH is a solid beer for sure and I'm happy to drink it, but for whatever reason, Hop Butcher's attempts didn't catch on with my guys.

I'd like to have a word with those who didn't like the first batch of GB! *shakes fist*

Also, @CityofWind_brew, I'm curious as well. Since the hops used are different (or more varied?), I'm curious whether this will hold up. I grabbed a bottle but probably won't crack it until later this week.

That's cool. It's just that your previous post came off as really focusing on what the beers are "worth" from trade perspective as to what you really thought of them.

There are definitely plenty of beers nationwide I would like to check out and try to when possible, but can't swallow the extra costs of shipping for it all. I'm more of an IP trader, with the occasional shipping involved.

Yeah, non-IP trades are too much work, given the quality of beer coming out of the Chicagoland area. If I believed that beers think *****-*****-juliusssss or whatever were actually life-changing I might reconsider, but as of right now I'm happy trading for the shit I've missed nearby.

For the record, I don't have a problem with trading, especially if you take a $4$ approach. Personally, the few trades I attempted were with people more interested in "winning" the trade than just swapping some out-of-market beers. Your post about relative value just struck a similar chord. It read more like "these beers are better because they bring a larger return," as opposed to "my trading partners would rather have these beers because they're better." The post by @croush sums up my initial reaction, but I appreciate your clarification and if we ever cross paths, the first pint is on me.

I love how everyone has a different perspective on this style.

I thought "Juicy" was by far the worst, and have no idea why everyone goes nuts for it. It's got no Hop flavor to it IMO. Nothing like trillium, which can be very bitter, in addition to the citrus.

The Hop Butcher stuff, is completely different on the other end of the scale. They're more IPA's that arent clear looking.

The only beer I've really felt captured everything perfectly was Transient Flightless. Even JIL is too sweet with the hops taking a bit of a back seat.

But again, to each their own. The fact that there's no real consensus on this style is what makes these conversations fun.

Not only are palates going to differ, but the condition of your palate when you're drinking also makes an (obnoxiously) crazy difference. I had a Reply Hazy last night, and it did nothing for me (probably because my mouth was still filled with spices from a curry dish I had an hour or two before); hops were muted and it was very average-tasting. The first one I had, I thought was one of the best NE IPAs in the city. And I specifically liked JIL because it's not too sweet, and was very citra-forward to me.

It's really been eye-opening talking to people on BA; you get a much better sense of how different people's taste buds are.
