Huna was my favorite overall beer of the ones I've had, but Mexican Cake is the best beer I've had that exhibited actual chile heat, stout or otherwise. I got very little spice or chile from Bomb, but still liked it.

Haven't had Abraxas yet, but damn do I want to!

If you like the heat try Catherine's Resentment and Space Ghost. Those are "hotter" than Mexi. I can't choose a personal favorite between those three. Abraxas is good but a totally different animal than Huna, Cake, etc. It's more cinnamon and less heat. It's like a fudge brownie dusted in cinnamon with just the slightest touch of pepper.

I would certainly love to try the the Resentment and Space Ghost! However, I honestly think the level of heat in Mexican Cake was about perfect for me. And I didn't even have it super fresh, had it a couple weeks ago. But it was perfect because it didn't all hit you at once, it just kept building with each sip and was spicy by the time you finished it. That's exactly what I like in food as well, like a good Thai dish. A single bite is not overly spicy, but it builds throughout the meal and by the time you're done with your plate you need to go blow your nose.

Your description of Abraxas has my mouth watering!

We are about to run one of these and got the exact list of beers you mentioned plus a Luchador En Fuego and a Hill Farmstead Madness and Civilization 4.

My buddy is going to make a stout chili out of Crime and Punishment as well. Just an idea.

Thanks for the suggestions. If anyone has a space ghost, hit me up, I'm sure we could work something out!

This one is "Chocolate Sombrero" and the barrel aged version is "Luchador En Fuego". Just adding some clarity. OP: Hurry up and post some results.

Was about to get all persnickety about chile vs. chili, but then read this article. Seems the debate rages on! For me, chile = peppers, chili = spicy meat and bean stew. Which is why I tend to avoid using the term "chili stouts", because the thought of a stout with spicy meat and bean stew is so unappetizing.

In any case, definitely post the results, OP. Just had Bomb! recently and thought it was totally a nice drink but distinctly lacking in chile heat.

Another option, BTW, is Copper Kettle's Mexican Chocolate Stout.

Cocoa Fuego was very hot! I didn't like it, but I'm not into any of the hot pepper anything. If you want a competitor for hot, this one can put up a fight.

Sorry this is a non stout, but my ears are currently being blow by the spiciness of a habanero sculpin. Prairie bomb has nothing on this one!

@Gtreid, you ever get around to do this tasting? If so, how'd it go? Thoughts/opinions/rankings?

A little bit outside the parameters, but maybe add Stone Smoked Porter w/ Chipotle?

I'll come across as a homer (understandably), but I think Copper Kettle's MCS is hands down the best of this variety. They got a GABF gold for it, so I'll lean on that so I don't seem quite as biased. :grinning:
At the same time, it's also by far the spiciest of the bunch, too. Some of those taste like beer first while MCS is very heavy on the cinnamon and chili.
