Going to be brew with my future brother-in-law next weekend. He has never brewed before, and this will be my third batch. He was able to secure 3 oz. of Chinook pellets from a connection, so we are going to make that the base hop of the beer. Any suggestion on hops that would complement the Chinook and what would be the best way to utilize them? Also, btw I am not at the point of looking to do all-grain yet, so I think this will be extract w/ specialty. I am also planning on dry hopping. Any help, suggestions, advice for technique would be great! :grinning:

Any of the American "IPA" hop varieties can match great with Chinook - Centennial, Cascade, Citra, CTZ , Amarillo, Simcoe. It all depend on what you are looking for taste wise and what you can find. Here is a link posted by another BA Homebrewer that can teach you more about what hop to choose.

I am puting together an Pinly the Elder (DIPA) clone and to be honest 3oz of Chinook is not really a huge find. My recipe calls for a full pound of hops for a five gallon batch. Personally, for only your third batch I would stick with a "single" IPA before moving up to a high gravity DIPA, which would need a large yeast starter. Stick with a basic Hop schedule 60 10 0 dry hop, I wouldn’t want to get to elaborate when try to teach. As far as malt goes get some (8lbs or so) extra light lem/dme and a half pound of caramel malt.

8 or 9 pounds extra light DME/LME - 1/4 of it at 60 min the remainder at 10 min.

    1/2 pound crystal 40

60 min 1 oz CTZ or Warrior

10 min 1 oz Chinook and 1 oz (hop of you choice)

0 min 1 oz Chinook and 1 oz (Same hop from above) Let these hops steep for 20-30 min before cooling asap.

Dry Hop 1 oz Chinook and 1 oz (Same as above)

Yeast I would use Dry US-05 (easy, works well for IPAs IMO)

Most importantly keep ambient (room) temp in the low (62) to mid (65) degrees.

Add dry hops to primary once fermentation really starts to slow 4 to seven days.

Dry hop for 7-10 day and bottle or keg at that point.

    Good luck

+1 to jmich's tasty advice. You could also try a simple Arrogant Bastard clone (all Chinook):

    OG 1066, 95+ IBU
    9.00-ish lb. pale lme/dme
    0.75 lb. special b
    0.75 oz. chinook 60 min.
    0.75 oz. chinook 45 min.
    0.75 oz. chinook 20 min.
    0.75 oz. chinook 0 min.
