hey! I am trying to locate some beers for my husband as a gift. Thanks to the reviews on beer advocate I have located a great store in Denver that I have a friend going to. The problem I am having is making sure it's something we really can't get in Georgia. Can anyone who is from Georgia or just knowledgable help me out? I was thinking of getting: Left Hand's Wake Up Dead the Oak Aged version). Bull & Bush's Legend of the Liquid Brain Dry Dock Signature Series barrel Thoughts? What would you get? Thanks for the help!
You might want to check out seekabrew.com and compare Georgia with Colorado to find out what is available there that GA doesn't have access to...for me it would be beers by Crooked Stave, Almanac and Russian River(Not sure if they distribute bottles there or not). Left Hand distributes to Georgia.
Crooked Stave, as KMitch pointed out, and I'm sure others will too. They do distribute to other states, but not all. Also, could be some unique Yeti variants that don't make it out of Colorado. Of course, Avery and Oskar Blues have some solid in state offerings as well
Thanks guys I'll check out that site. I know that left hand is here but I didn't think the oak aged made its way down here. I have a friend in Cali working on Russian river and seeing what she can find.
Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the help. He is one lucky guy- also a really good guy! I have to say I never knew about the seekabrew.com site. It’s great! I’ll post any good finds I get. I knew this was the place to get some good help.
I don't know either market to be able to make any recommendations (other than I agree with Russian River), but I'll suggest that you check out the regional forums for CO and CA for threads that ask for recommendations for beers that are currently popular and available. Telling us your husband's style preferences could also help with getting specific recommendations. Good luck.
Avery's (Annual Barrel Series) offerings are terrific. In particular, Uncle Jacobs Stout is one to look for. However, hard to wrong with anything in that series. The year round offerings are great too if some of those don't make it out your way. Also, I agree with Crooked Stave...I haven't had a bad beer from them yet. Cheers!
Thanks! This is the new list I have complied: 1. Dry Dock Coffee Porter 2. Dry Dock Vanilla porter 3. Bull and Bush’s Legend of the liquid brain 4. Crooked Stave? (Suggested to me...is there anything in the store?) 5. Avery’s annual barrel series maybe- Uncle Jacobs Stout 6. Funkwerks 7. Deschutes I know that he is a big fan of Dechutes. I went to his beer cellar and he has a lot of stouts and imperial stouts. He loves Hoppy beers as well. So for example, I know he won’t cellar most IPA’s but if there’s one that is only in Colorado- he would like it and could drink it when I got it. He brews as well so I know the hoppier the better. Hopefully I am on the right path!
With regard to Crooked Stave. If your husband likes funky/tart amazing saisons... I would recommend Vielle or any of the St. Bretta variants. Cheers!
I got the 2 dry docks, crooked stave, liquid brain, dogfish and a fresh Colorodo brew "the maharaja" and an Avery tweak. How'd I do?
We get none of these in Georgia, except for Crooked Stave, which just released today. If you see Avery Tweak on the shelves in Denver, be sure to grab one. Barrel-aged Mephistopheles stout with loads of coffee. Look for Big Bad Baptist if Imperial stouts with coffee are your husband's things. None of the beers you've listed are particularly hoppy. They're more "funky" (i.e. Brett and lacto sours). Just FYI.
We get Maharaja, but it's a solid beer. If the DFH is 120 Minute IPA, you did great. Tweak is an absolute winner. As I noted, Crooked Stave released in ATL today, but there was no way for you to know that. Their beer is good stuff, so that fact is irrelevant. Any beer he gets should be appreciated with love. Nuff said.
Saw the Dry Docks during a business trip to Denver a couple weeks ago. I passed them up in favor of a few Elevation beers (damn winter--I actually had to pack clothes). But they were highly recommended to me. Fairly sure those were solid choices.
Thanks guys. Yeah we are in Gainesville so we probably didn't get the crooked stave out here. Glad to hear that it sounds like a good pick up! I think he'll enjoy them a lot. All the help is super appreciated!!
the other thing to check is beers from breweries that distro to GA, but that are above the 14% ABV state limit. There's a few Avery and DFH that clock in above that magic mark.
Kudos to you on putting in some sincere thought on this gift. Good luck on your quest. If there's anything in the RI/MA area you need, let me know.
@Hfrome If you want to get him a hoppy beer that he will never see in GA see if @Providence can hook you up with something from Trillium...their Congress Street IPA and Ft. Point pale ale are both amazing.
