Church and Beer

my best tastings are with friends from church. no one gets too out of hand, but we all have a great time. they are ALL into trying new and different beers, even if they had bad experiences with those styles in the past. good and honest conversation always occurs once the beer loosens things up...

alcohol and christianity have been linked for a long long time. the american prohibition brought it apart....really wish they would have separated church and state in that one.....

When I lived in Nashville we had church in a bar. Scotch makes for good sharing time, haha.

 

I've had a recurring dream about my local cathedral being turned into a brewpub. The bar area is split down the middle in place of these choir stalls.

 

Well, if you didn't know, in Europe before large brewing companies appeared, a majority of beer was personally brewed or brewed by a Church/ Monastery, thus the reason why some of the best beers of Europe were or are currently still made in a religious setting.

I'm an active member of a Southern Baptist church, one of the only SBC churches where the moderate consumption of alcohol is not frowned on. Pastors there all say you can't make a case from the Bible for the total prohibition of alcohol. Since the Bible does not prohibit it, and since where there is no law, there is no sin, many of our church members are pretty open about drinking. I believe beer is one of the blessings from God, allowed to be created by man and meant to be enjoyed. Of course like most things, it can be abused.

 

At The church in Pittsburgh one of the old confessionals is a bathroom.....

 

maybe some of you guys with your pro-beer churches could talk to the other churches out there whose members were responsible for so many "blue laws" that we still have to deal with in many states. It's not the secularist folks who are responsible for restrictions on Sunday purchases & consumption.

 

Sunday laws here aren't all that restrictive, but IMO there shouldn't be any restrictions at all.

 

Many people at my church say there will be no alcohol in heaven, I just think really!! Baptist comes from John the Baptist, who God command him never to let alcohol touch his lips. The same was true with Samson, and a few others of the Bible. they did not believe in shaving or cutting there hair. And there was a certain group of Jews that do not drink, but the Bible does not say you cannot.

 

Jesus turned water into wine, but that was obviously before bottled water. Better wine than dysentery.

 

Now this I could get behind - less about attracting people and more about brotherhood!

I have to admit I'm surprised to read characters like Calvin, Knox, Puritans (both English and American branches) drank alcohol.

 

I drink my beer faithfully each day.

 

Spokane has a good mens bible study that meets at a local pub. Awesome group of guys. It fills up every week though, so I have only been once.

 

You beat me to it. I am heading there on Saturday. Celestial Gold is very good and Thunderhop IPA is fantastic.

 

A cool idea but not something I'd subscribe to. I like to keep my drinking and praying separate.

 

When you're drunk, you'll believe (in) anything. I'm surprised it took this long for the church to figure that out.

 

This is intriguing. I personally lead a young adults group for my church, and several of us are into craft beer, so often after our study time we share a growler or some bottles, but it isn't an advertised or official part of the group. I don't see any issue with churches doing this. I think it's smart to break away from the legalism of the "holiness movement", which is a relatively new thing in church history that made drinking alcoholic beverages out to be "sinful", which is ridiculous since Jesus himself both drank and gave wine to his disciples on multiple occasions!
