I have a friend who will be going to Cigar City today. Do they sell bottles in addition to growlers at the brewery? Whatever he picks up needs to come home with him on a plane and a growler might be a little less manageable than a 750 or two. Also, any suggestions on what he should grab while there. I am open to most styles, but I tend to drink with the seasons.

Yea they usually have jai alai, maduro, Zhukov, and a few more bottles in the brewery.

They don't have Zhukov bottles and those only lasted a few days. They'll have random 750s. You can check cigarcitybrewing.com or call and see what they have.

How have their growlers been holding up?

I haven't heard if any more exploding if that's what you're asking about.

Interesting timing of you both mentioning this....please explain this further...whatever you both know....because my Mom picked up a growler of MZ yesterday for me and it exploded overnight in her friends house she's staying at...completely exploded...shattered and ruined her friends rug. She called and they told her "It has never happened before". I want some answers from Cigar City. Unacceptable in my opinion. What are other people doing/what should she do?

A few months ago they got a bad batch of growlers that they filled with what I believe was apple brandy hunahpu. A few people had issues with them exploding.

Apparently they still have the bad batch of growlers. Pretty upsetting considering my Mom is down there only once and they act like it's never happened before. I just called and they start to ask questions implying that it is something she did, not that they are serving out bad growlers. Very unimpressed with how they're handling this right now.

Are they literally exploding? I'm glad no one has gotten hurt.

Yes, they are literally exploding. Like shards of glass in chunks my Mom said. She picked it up last night and it exploded only hours later. I am glad no one got hurt also. Luckily it was in the middle of the night. It was just sitting there in a room, she did nothing to cause it to do that. Totally unacceptable. They acted like it was no big deal when I called. Pretty furious right now. Going to get through to the President or CEO and handle it that way since the people in the tasting room don't give a shit. I want to make sure she gets a full refund on her entire purchase, and they should completely stop serving out growlers after I made that call, but they don't care.

Well, they're not going to completely stop serving growlers, but to what I've heard, the bottoms of some of the growlers they had were busting spontaneously, but they were doing right by passing out growlers of AB MZ. This was old news from about 6 months ago or so, though. Sucks to hear what happened to your mama.

I wish I was making a trip to Tampa this weekend. I have 7 empty 32 oz growlers and I'd gladly donate to the cause.

I've never heard of growlers spontaneously exploding. Weird.

When it happened with the Apple Brandy Zhukov, the bottoms of the growlers were breaking off (IIRC). Was that your issues?

Theres a picture of Stephen (Heatwave33) holding the exploded growlers (one of which was mine) somewhere in a thread buried deep in the thralls of BA threads.

Coming from someone that lives close(ish) to CCB and have lots of friends who regularly buy growlers or visit, it's not common, at all. CCB also has a fantastic crew of people that run the brewery, tasting room and in the field and are kick ass in regards to any questions or problems. When the Zhukov stuff happened a few months back, I heard from more than one person that CCB hooked them up. I also recall a story from another BA about getting a bad batch of Maduro up in New York and CCB replacing it for him and sending some swag as well.

It sucks if the growler broke but don't vilify a *great* brewery over it. It's just beer.

I do not doubt the overall quality of Cigar City. I love their beer. In fact, myself and my Mom who went down there from Rhode Island had been excited for months about this. The fact that this happened to her kills me. Even worse, her friends rug is completely destroyed now because of the explosion. Imagine what MZ does to a rug. You say "It's just beer". Well, actually, now it is not. Who is paying for that rug to be replaced? What if someone was holding the growler and it exploded? It's not cool, and it should not be taken lightly. Do you think they should keep serving them out until someone gets injured, and then replace the glass? They need to step up and do something. Going to speak to either the president or CEO next week. I don't care if it is a one in a million instance, I don't want someone getting hurt. So no, it's not "just beer".

Well, instead of re-complaining about it on here, send an email to joe@cigarcitybrewing. This thread won't do anything to rectify the situation for you. I've bought dozens of growlers from them and not had a problem. The one time problem was a bad batch of growlers from the manufacturer and was only with ones filled with Zhukov. In the past, I have had instances from other breweries where the bottom of the growler actually cracked and sheared off from the main part. I concluded that either myself or someone that had handled the growler had set it down a little too hard and caused a slight fracture in the glass. When the beer warmed, the excess co2 was enough to cause the growler to break. It's happened to me and it sucks, but taking over this guy's thread complaining about it isn't the way to go about getting this resolved.

Wow... I get that this is an dangerous situation but its hardly cigar city's fault... I believe that would be the fault of the growler manufacturer. Might have better luck pursuing this with cigar city in a calm rational fashion
