I have a friend that recently moved to Cincinnati and is having trouble finding quality ipa breweries or stores that may get quality fresh hops. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You’ll get more looks in the Great Lakes forum as cincy is considered part of a Great Lake state. I’m assuming he’s been to mad tree and listerman. Those would be my 2 favorite hop breweries there

Street side, rhinegeist, madtree, listermann for breweries with good hop forward offerings. Urban artifact crushes the fruited sours. Stores: cappys, bc bottle lodge, jungle Jim’s, white oak marathon, root cellar.

Fresh hops? Is he a home brewer? Maybe starting a new brewpub? I hear a lot of brewers are willing to help out fellow brewers, but it's a "one hand washing the other" deal. Good luck to him.

Is he looking to buy hops for drink them? If he's in Northern Cinti, there's a couple breweries with good IPA's. Sonder in Mason has several rock star IPA's, and a new brewery in Maineville called Cartridge Brewery (1 mile from Kings Island off I-71) has a Pale Ale that just won a Bronze Medal at a state of Ohio brewery contest. They have a couple IPA's that are real solid, too.

And I bet both places would be more than happy to sell him actual hops if that's what he's looking for.

People do that? Even the best food processor is going to turn the wettest "fresh (i.e., wet) hops" into a paste, pretty hard to drink.

Beside the ones mentioned above, Brink also deserves a shout. I suppose they're better known for the non-hoppy beers they've won GABF awards for, but I've been happy with the IPAs I've tried from them as well.

Makes sense as an abbreviation - a 4 letter word which describes one ingredient used in place of a 4 letter abbreviation!

Was gonna make toast with my Christmas breakfast but we're all out of fresh wheat!

(Not to mention we lost power at 2am. Manual drip coffee, ground on the hand-powered mill, water heated on the propane Weber. It's a Christmas miracle!)

I apologize for the misleading title, but appreciate all the responses. Yes, he is looking for local breweries that make ipa’s as a cornerstone of their output. Also looking for stores that may get ipa’s from local places or elsewhere that are also fresh and not sitting on shelves for long periods of time. Seems there is a great mix of beer styles and breweries in the Cincinnati area but that there aren’t many breweries that are west coast or “New England” style ipa centric.

Listermann seems to make a new NEIPA or milkshake IPA like every week.

I might be kinda biased here, but as far as hoppy/IPA brews go in Ohio Cincy really isn't known for their hoppier beers. If someone wants better hoppy brews in Ohio then they should go for Columbus and Cleveland area breweries instead. Fat Heads, Brew Kettle, Columbus Brewing, Derive, RShea, Hoof Hearted, Masthead and Dankhouse are where to go for hoppy brews. Not that Cincy area breweries don't make any good hoppy beers, but in general there aren't any Cincy breweries that I think of right away when it comes to hops.

He won’t find a better west coast IPA than Fatheads HeadHunter (frankly all of their IPAs are amazing). It’s not a Cincy brewery, but it is always available and fresh. IPAs from Columbus Brewing are nearly as good, as is White Rajah from The Brew Kettle.

As for NE Style, many breweries are all-in on the style. As mentioned, Listermann seems to drop new options every few days. I’ve been hot and cold on them. Two of the best in the area (at least IMO) are year-round shelfies from a couple of locals. Braxton Tropic Flare and Sonder You Betcha are always available nearly everywhere.

Another store he should check out is Higher Gravity. They let you buy anything from the shelves as a single...pretty good selection too.

I agree----we have more sours, porters, and stouts than hops, although my favorite imperial
IPA is just up the street at Mt Carmel with their Snapshot series that comes out
I think around Summer time. That said Cincinnati is a test market and they
seem to veer towards vanilla. As the adage goes, if it sells in Cincinnati, it will
    sell anywhere.

Send him to Branch & Bone in Dayton. Packaging fresh hops regularly and also ships direct anywhere in Ohio.
