    Peter Doelger came from Bavaria to the US in 1849 (or 1850, sources vary) and died in 1912. He was one of the earliest, successful lager beer brewers in NYC and among the 10-15 largest US lager beer breweries by the end of 19th century.

    His son, Peter Doelger, Jr. took over the firm but sold out to other family members during Prohibition, and he died in 1936.

    So, no apparent connection to Belgium, and both "Peter Doelgers" died before WWII. :wink:

    I know some* folks reading this are thinking:

    "Geez, I wonder what Peter Doelger looked like? In an old, yellowed and Scotch-tape-adhesive stained newspaper clipping found among other papers and bought 30 years ago in a flea market?"

    Well, you're in luck*!

    I guess that's "Jr.", who went on to be a big NYC-based millionaire real estate mogul, running Peter Doelger, Inc.

    * Perhaps an over-estimate in both cases.:grinning:

    This is the smartest most informative thread Beer Talk has seen in years. Well done.

    So much for that Belgian connection... maybe the wives' sides? :wink:

    What we need is access to the brewery records- maybe at the NYC library or historical society?
