well iv spent the last two months in the usa and when i arrived i disliked IPA's and now since im home here in ireland i find myself craving them, however i seemed to favour the more citrussy/floral ones and disliked the piney/resiny ones, im wondering could anyone recommend some citrusy IPA's for me to try here, obviously iv got a limited selection but we get anchor, sierra nevada, flying dog, odells, rogue and goose island here so from them can anyone pick out some citrusy beers? i had flying dog doggie style the other night and loved it but id like to try something harder

    cheers

From the breweries you named I'd put my vote in for Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or Sierra Nevada Torpedo.

Torpedo is a very good IPA, but I just don't understand how people keep refering to it as a "citrusy" IPA. What am I doing wrong?

If you can get your hands on some Jai Alai I would definitely recommend that as a citrusy IPA

It does have citra in it but I don't really see it either. I know a lot of people do but I was actually recommending it for more of a floral one.

I'll tell, and I hate to do this, because I know a bunch of college kids are gonna run out and buy all of it up now, but I was at the store yesterday trying to squelch a citra hop craving. I couldn't find anything to help me out, so I bought two brothers sidekick. It's not the best or anything...I am not a fan of two brothers. It is a reasonably priced citra hop pale ale though. 10$ a six. It is thin and not much mouth feel to it, but it is made with citra. It's kinda like flat mountain dew...but when in a pinch it will help squelch the crave. It's like going with the mexi brick because there is no bud around.

With IPAs citrus/floral notes, the secret is more about freshness than which ones IMO

If they sell Flying Dog over there, look for Raging Bitch. When fresh its got good floral/citrus notes in it combined with slight Belgian spices to give a more unique flavor profile. Any American IPA though may be tough to find fresh over there I would guess. Its hard to get them fresh in the states, with many old ones stocked on the shelves.

I don't think I have gotten any huge citrus notes out of anything you mentioned that you get in Ireland. But, if you can get your hands on some Deschutes Fresh Sqeezed IPA you will find what you are craving.

I read a few months back that Founders would be distributing to the UK so maybe they will branch out to Ireland, not just Northern Ireland. They have a couple IPA's that are in the citrusy range.

I agree. It's not very citrusy. I'd call it more spicy and earthy with a touch of citrus.

I don't know why it hasn't been mentioned, but I get a lot of citrus and tropical from odell ipa and myrcenary. Myrcenary is a bit more resinouus, but still quite tropical. Maybe I should fit in with the crowd though and suggest beers that you don't get, that way if I'm wrong you can't call me out on it.

Trade for some Alpine Nelson or CCB Jai Alai. Problem is, once you taste those two, you'll be ruined.

Odell IPA and Myrcenary - both amazing. Neither screams citrus, but they are both rather floral and not overly bitter or piney. Myrcenary definitely has some tropical notes, as mentioned above. Odell IPA is one of my favorites.
