Has anyone here had any of their beers besides the Chai Porter Collabo? The only people I've heard say anything about it are the same people that throw out words like, "Wit" and "Hefe" and say they like IPAs just to sound like they know what they're talking about. In other words, the people I hear hyping this place up are people that don't know what they're talking about and it leads me to think this place isn't going to be worth a visit. I mean, a place that does invites only through FaceBook already seems like a place I don't want to go.

If I'm wrong about any of this, please enlighten me.

Went to their April open house a few weeks ago. Keep in mind that they're not actually open yet - at this point they're still just trying to get their name out there and create a little more interest. They're not operating as a business right now, so all they can do is the preview events.

They had a small but nice selection of beers available. Admittedly, the IPA wasn't anything that special - good, but nothing to write home about. Their saison and black IPA were enjoyable, but the standout of the day was their Belgian strong ale, basically a clone of Gulden Draak. Strong and sweet and quite nice - I went back for seconds. None of the beers had noticeable flaws, and I think the strong ale proved they have some good knowledge about brewing.

The biggest concern I have about City Acre is the location. I think it will be very difficult to sustain a brewpub that far away from the more active parts of Houston. That said, though, I do wish them the best of luck and hope they can make it work, because I like what I've seen so far.

Giving up on a brewpub based on what a certain "type" of person has said five months before it's even opened?

Are you going to respond or just going to make faces? I don't believe I said gave up on anything, but I did list reasons why I'm not too excited by it.

No, like yourself, I have no firsthand experience with City Acre. Just don't see any reason to judge an operation when you haven't even been there or tried any of their stuff.

I was at the April tasting and I actually found their Belgian Strong to be very different from Gulden Draak which is a Belgian Dark Strong and fairly brown in color while this was very pale--especially for the alcohol content.

Interested to see what else they do.

I've been to two tasting events at City Acre. The beers are solid and the food is even better. My only issue was the location...59 and Parker.

Now the question is, is the location worth driving to once it opens on the regular or just a place to go to other than your usual haunts?

I say Wit and Hefe, I guess I am not cool enough to have an opinion on beer. Kind of like people that say Collabo :wink:

In talking with them at the last event, the main reason they're out there is because they want to grow as much food as possible onsite. I guess it's not easy to get that much land in Montrose.

For me, it's not about distance. The location is right off the highway so it is easily accessible but I doubt I would ever go there after dark. The neighborhood just isn't very desirable. So yes, you can get more land there for the money, but at what cost to business prospects? I would prefer them grow there and have the brewpub somewhere nicer and bring in the food ingredients.

Don't get me wrong, I like the people, the food, and the beer...a lot. And I'll make sure to frequent them on weekends. My only complaint is the location. Everything else is awesome.

I went last summer and had fun. Great people.

I'm guessing something fell through as I haven't heard a peep in ages.

They have had a lot of permit and City of Houston issues. Hopefully they are getting close though.

Went to the invite last spring, beers were good, food was good, location licked butthole... Wouldn't travel to go to a tour or tasting like Karbach or even Saint A, but at least they're fighting the good fight

Man, I think I went out to visit them back in late 2011. Hope they can finally get things off the ground there after the long wait.
