What kind of brewery are you going to where people are using glass shards to fight people? Yeah at terrible, shithole bars plastic cups should be used, but at a craft brewery it should be nothing but glass. Also to get around having glass containers on the tour, do what Ballast Point does and don't allow drinking on the tour. That is what the tasting room is for.

No they stopped a while ago, I'm not exactly sure when but it's all glass now.

As a brewery owner, I can tell you there is little to no cost difference for clear and amber growlers. I prefer clear growlers, I want to see the beer in the growler. I bought Amber ones for my brewery though, as most people tend to prefer them. For clear growlers, just use the growler cozy's commonly available now-a-days until you get the beer home and in the fridge.

I have two clear 32oz growlers. When I get them filled I have the clerk put them in paper bags to cover them before I go outside. I live 1.5 miles away so I get it to a fridge fairly quick and when the fridge is closed it's dark. I have never had an issue with a clear growler.

Georgetown in Seattle uses clear and I asked them why - they swap out growlers (if you bring in a growler and want a refil they gvie a new already filled growler rather than refilling the exact one you bring in) so it helps them ensure people aren't bringing back moldy, gross growlers...not saying it justifies it or anything but that was their reasoning.

Toppling Goliath has both clear and amber growlers. They know shit out of beer so I'd say it's just a matter of preference. End of debate.

You have never been to Brooklyn Brewing? We said the last time we were there, not going back. That was the second time, the plastic cups were one thing both times. The second time many of the beers were off, including a cask beer that was pure cardboard. There, I finally said what was true.

It would; but as I said, back in the day, all the growlers I got were clear.

I think completely understood your post. Sorry if I came off as dick-ish...

Not some much worried about seeing the growlers sealed as when. At one place, my worries were compounded by said growlers being sold at room temperature.

You could reuse them as mini brewing vessels.

Thanks for the brewer's insight, it's always helpful to hear what other people in the industry are thinking. It seems pretty evident from the responses here that personal preference plays a major part, so obliging your customers with the opportunity to fill whatever growlers they bring in is a generous practice. That being said, from the apparent consensus that there is an inherent risk of light pollution tainting your beer in clear glass, even minutely, as a brewer I would still cringe, like you, at the thought of someone purchasing my beer only to risk having them not drink it at its best. While overhead and insurance are important, at the end of the day if you're slaving to make the best product you possibly can only to put it out there and not ensure it's consumed at its prime, then there seems to be something wrong with that picture.

Ive never seen a clear glass growler, only brown from any place I've bought them. For growlers Eh, they are consumed quickly, and if you ship them they're wrapped. Is someone can't fill a brown growler correctly they probably shouldn't be driving a car either.

Not sure why you doubt multiple people and brewing resources saying the same thing, but it is absolutely possible. Take a really hoppy beer, put it in a clear glass, and put it in direct sunlight for a bit. I've had IPAs skunk before my glass was empty.

Visited Greenport Harbor Brewing tonight and was surprised to see clear 64oz growlers. I'm surprised ANYONE uses these any more. Interestingly the 32oz were brown glass.

My own growlers stayed in the car, empty, arrived and left that way, fwiw.

I'm not doubting it can happen, but it's never happened to me. Maybe because I've never left sun for a long time, I tend to drink them. But driving home from the store yesterday with a bottle of enjoy by on the front seat I did pop open my window shade and cover it even though it was double bagged lol

I have also ran into a place where the bar only used plastic cups for beer due to some permit issues. I was shocked and offended. As for the clear glass for beer, there is no reason whatsoever to use that over dark brown unless they don't plan on being in the craft brewing industry long.

Oliver Brewing in Baltimore gave Michael Jackson (no white glove) a batch of ESB in a clear growler that made it in his 500 classic brew book....just sayin'
