Applicable with any two vessels that hold pressure and have two ports (1 top, 1 bottom). I use Spiedel fermentors with spigots on bottom and top (blowoff). When transferring to clean, sanitized keg, push sanitizer out of outpost via CO2, flush keg and transfer lines well with CO2. You can leave a few PSI in sanitized keg and right before you start transfer hook back up liquid transfer line and gas out line to blow CO2 out to flush lines of O2. Beer out of fermenter (bottom spigot) to “out” post on keg. Gas “in” post connect to top spigot. Try to move lines quick after flushing with CO2, avoid any O2 pickup. Open top spigot, allow any remaining pressure in keg to enter fermenter. Open bottom valve, allow beer out to enter keg via “out” post/dip tube. As beer transfers into CO2 purges keg, displaced gas will go out of gas “in” post and to the top of fermenter (balance line) so pressure equalizes. Flow should be steady, slower. Should be able to transfer 5 gallons this way in less than 15 mins. Will purge full keg of beer some more after transfer (through “out” post) for additional security from O2 pickup. Closed transfer, set it up, start it, forget it. Anyone else do this? Any other tips and tricks to closed transfer?
That's my exact setup when using the spiedel. I usually put the keg on a scale since I will have 2-3 kegs to fill per batch and can tell when I'm full. It took me a few cycles to get all the bits and pieces and hosing adapters correct to connect the system, but it's a nice system.
Brew hardware has a neat adapter so you can use cam locks for transfers. I used it today with no problems. https://www.brewhardware.com/product_p/camffl.htm
Could I use something like this at the top of the spiedel and a liquid connect jumper line from the bottom spigot to the liquid out post of the corny if I just apply a few psi? https://www.norcalbrewingsolutions....l-Lock-Gas-In-with-Pressure-Relief-Valve.html
Yeah go for it, I wouldn’t do more than 1-2 PSI on the Spiedel though. And vent the keg as you go in and you should be golden.
