I brewed my first beer a couple of weeks ago and cleaned everything after letting it soak for about a day in water. My hose has clouded up since then, I just did a wash of it with PBW and siphoned it through the hose for 20 minutes or so but it's still cloudy. Is this going to have any negative effects in any way? I don't see any gunk in there and I'll obviously sanitize before use.

    Thanks,
    Tim

Tim, I am pretty sure that as long as you properly sanitize your hose before each use that you will be OK.

Maybe some BA with a better knowledge can provide an explanation for why clouding occurred. Maybe some residue from the cleaning solution?

    Cheers!

    The power of the internet!

“What did you clean it with? One Step? If so, that is what made it cloudy. The per carbonate cleaners such as One Step, Easy Clean, Oxy Clean, and PBW as well as K-Meta will make the hose cloudy particularly if left to soak. Almost all of my tubing looks this way.”

I did do a search but didn't find that site. The ones I did find weren't very helpful with one person saying they buy new hoses any times there's anything on it and others talking about using wire and small rag pieces and forcing it through. Seemed excessive so thought I would ask the smartest Brewers on the Internet.

    Thanks,
    Tim

You'll be fine with a thorough hot rinse. Over time and exposure to PBW and BEST mine have also clouded.

You are fine, like everyone said.. If you leave your hoses in starsan they will cloud up as well.

Honestly.. as cheap as they are.. if you changed your hose out every 6 months, you'd be fine.

Try a hot PBW wash and cold rinse, then star san before use and you are fine.

Inexpensive to replace every so often; however ... back in the day IIRC ... @Homebrew42 reported using the tube for the past nine years and counting.

Also ... beer line brush + a brief sodium percarbonate soak ==> cleanliness right up there next to good godliness.

I can't say I've used tubing for over 9 years, but at least 3 years I can confirm. It's a nice light brown color now. Only use it during sparging from the mash tun to the kettle. I quick rinse and air dry. My thought process is that any liquid coming in contact with this tubing is getting boiled for at least 60 minutes so why worry.

Its true, I've been using the same tubing for over a decade and have yet to have a problem with it. I've seen it turn cloudy from bleach and brown from iodophor but I've never been particularly concerned about it. I wash all tubing immediately after use then spin to get most of the water out and hang dry.

+1 to what everyone is saying. rinse in hot water, spin it out on your balcony / back yard. Should clear up. Prost

I'm very very liberal on my use of hosing. I like my hoses clean, clear, spotless, and new. I"ll reuse a few times, and then toss. Way on the other side from hb42, but, it's my tiny tiny way of being OCD-not that I am about anything, ever, just hoses.
